New england meet up

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

New england meet up

Post by fusername »

So every other damn state, or at least california, has like 5 meetups a month. What about us northerners? we're all gonna hafta cross state lines to pull it off, but I figure something can be arranged. I think the snow and mud is still a bit too much for myself, as my rail is not quite bolted together so I will be taking my bus, and Namelesswonder's car is mostly stock. She just doesn't know she's going yet.
Who else would want to go meet up in NE somewhere? I figure the NH natives should know of some good stomping grounds, as eastern mass is pretty much urban all the way, and where it isn't we have strict no messign around laws. stupid state.

so lets get a thread started!
give a man a watch and he'll allways know what time it is. give him two and he can never be sure again.

I'd be game. If we can wait until the snow melts and I can get my baja going (priority project, even my wife agrees!!!) then we can definitely find some place to go play. Where I'm at is a little urban sprawl but 20 minutes or so north and I know we can find some place to play. Woods crawling? I know there are a few more NE folks here some place, maybe southern ME has something?
Now MELT SNOW MELT!
GRRR.
I'd hate to have to take the Dakota or Cherokee...and have Franz hand me my ass.

Yeah, the issue for me is just driving. I'd love to do this, but I can't drive on main roads yet, forget highways. Me and the clutch are buddies, but I get very nervous, and that's a problem at intersections and traffic lights. I have yet to drive on an exit ramp, and they terrify me. ANYWAY, yeah I'm interested, but I don't know when I'd be ready to drive Franz very far.

Franz sounds like he's gonna fall apart when he goes over bumps, so I really wouldn't worry about him handing anybody their ass, haha. I worry about the clunks, but if it is anything to worry about, I don't have the money to deal with it now. =(

Fusername, aren't you forgetting the small fact that your rail isn't legal yet anyway?

The clutch work will come, just takes practice. Nice thing is a VW is very forgiving to beginning drivers, just rev it up and ease out the clutch. I'm teaching my daughter as soon as I get mine going since her car will be a Bug as well. She's had a few lessons in the Mustang last summer but that wasn't really fair, it didn't stall but if you aren't really smooth on the clutch and gas, the back tires go up in smoke. The VW doesn't have that type of power so you can be a bit less graceful and still get rolling.
Exit ramps shouldn't be an issue, though I can see on ramps being a bit hairy, 'specially the way people in MA drive :D.

One way or another, if we do this, we'll get you and Franz up for the fun, even if I have to tow him up behind my truck.

I'm originally from ME & CT (almost everyone in CA is from somewhere else), there is some damn good wheeling there. I'd say more technically challenging too, running around in the sand can be done by anyone but climbing a hill in the woods with roots and tree trunks makes you think.

While I love the off-roading here in CA, keep in mind you do have to drive some to get to it. I typically travel 1.5 hrs to our regular spot, and 2.5 hrs to the good ones. Same thing in the summer, 3 hrs to get to the river to go Jetskiing. In CT, I literally rode out of my back yard.

Don't get discouraged, and don't make excuses, get out there and run your cars. It's tons of fun to actually meet some of these internet knuckleheads, check out their rides, and go kick up the dust.
I accidentally Googled my Twitter. (And I liked it)

I really don't see much of an issue since the state lines in the northeast are the same distance if not closer together than California's county lines!!

yeah but our relative VW density is like 1/6 of what it is out there!

maye I'll just have to drive NLW car up for her. Or I could finnaly have an excuse to build up a tow hitch for my bay. Or better yet spend the money and rent a trailer to haul my rail up, sos I don't need to worry about breakign someone elses car. I assure you those clunks are supposed to be there on Franz, lets you know hes working.
is Tad around these days? we could get him to bring you behind his jeep.

as far as the trip goes, I don't care where or how difficutl, although real simple would be nice to get the feel of things. we all gotta drive our cars home at the end of the day. Woods dunes hills rocks, I don't care. I just need to get out there. I have some paint that needs a scratchin.

All else fails, we can get a dolly and tow Franz up behind my Ram, though I think the drive would be good experience for the NameLessOne:).

I was out last night trying to find a house to pick up seats off Craigslist last night in the Freedom area of NH. Seems to me there are a lot of old logging roads up that way (about 15-20 minutes from my house and I'm about the same distance from the MA border and about 5 minutes from ME. I'm going to do some research and see about places we can use without pissing people off or getting ourselves into too much trouble. I've got an email into the local 4x4 club to see if they can give any suggestions. I keep people posted to what I find.

that would be awesome. I'll ask my buddy if he knows of anywehre good as well, and we could put together a google maps list of all our places.
Also, I have a beetle tow bar so we wouldn't have to rent, but I think the big question is does anyone have a winch! weather's not quite right yet, and sneaks needs to get his car ready, but this way we will be all prepared the second the planets align!

Tad's not around, BTW. He was going to FL for trapezing over his spring break (don't know when that is anyway). What a jerk.

I'm scared of exit ramps because of the whole 60mph to 30mph on a very tight turn! I mean, I know it'll be scary the first few times, but then I'll get the hang of it and it'll be fine. But it's just those first few times that I'm dreading.

I'll be more available in May for weekend-y things (being the second half of the semester right now, I need to focus on school work on the weekends, so i can't go home and hang out with FRanz).
