oil return

Post by nasse »

I’m looking for a place to connect oil return on my turbo T4.
The turbo is located over the left driveshaft. I read that some connect to the side of the sump or the lower part of the valve cover, but wouldn’t this locations cover the outlet with oil??. I also think the valve cover would be to high.
I was thinking of the flat space to the left of the oilpump. I think this will be above
Oil level, and also maybe the drag from rotating camgear would be helpful to suck oilfoam trough the hose. Also I think this space will not be splashed with oil during
Acceleration because of its separation from the sump..
What do you think??

I wouldn't put it at the back of the engine, due to the surge of oil
under accelleration.

But then again, I just do *drag race* type driving, not the twisties.

I think that the best place is the front of the sump.

I still don't see why the return has to be above the oil level. In the Turbomania book they show it returning to a Deep Sump. If it was above wouldn't the return line 'see' the case pressure the same as the feed side?

I can understand the Turbo being above the oil level though to allow it to drain.

You are correct type3.
A liquid *seeks* the lowest level.

Ask the same question in the forced inductionroom.. the oil that comes out of the turbo.. well let's put it like this... think of oil as wipe cream.. before the turbo it's smooth and easy.. after the turbo it's wiped up hard.. talking much more space.. more like foam than oil..

YES, you can return it under the the oillevel but it CAN give you some blue smoke due to oil not returning fast enough.

I return my oil on top of the sump just under number3s pushrodtubes! This is above the oillevel.. if you have not overfilled it..

This is just my opinion that I have made up from reading and testing in the real world

The valvecover works fine....if the turbo is high enought.... I once build an engine with the oil return in the pushrod tube;) that also worked out fine..

Good info Jonas, I'll definitley bear this in mind. I might consider using a chamber below turbo so it has enough volume for the oil, not sure yet. One to ponder. :)
