My other off road car

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

My other off road car

Post by Sneaks »

So, dunno if you have checked out my thread in the T1 forum, but I just got 1973 Super that used to be an SCCA Pro Rally car, with 70+ rallys from 1974 to I don't know when, but the last tags expired in 1995. I finally brought it home today, I'm going to detail the restoration here, since this is more my place than the T1 forum and it is sorta an off road car:)

You can read the whole story here: The resurrection of a Rally veteran

Boy I'll say! That CAN'T be a competition engine, that must be something put in to just drive the bug around or something.

Sneaks, what are your plans? Stock resto or restify? You know Supers can use quite a few parts off the 944...........
So you think your project is taking forever eh? Well you've got nothing on me.....

itll buff out. I'm gonna be up there to make sure he rally did buy this, and it ain't some elabroate scam on our goodwill!

so when you gonna put a big bore T4 in that sucker?
give a man a watch and he'll allways know what time it is. give him two and he can never be sure again.

Things are rarely just crazy enough to work, but they're frequently just crazy enough to fail hilariously.

Apparently, from the I got tonight relaying from the widow who got it from the mechanic who built the engine, the motor is 90.5 x 69 with a custom grind on the cam, the heads ported, a recurved dizzy (mechanical) and the carb has been reworked, though I do not know if this was information written down or from memory. I will not know I guess until I get it out and torn down. She's supposed to give me the contact info on this gentleman so I can talk to him further. I sure looks basic to me <shrug>.

I've been contacted on another board (for rallys) by Christian Edstrom (Travis Pastrana's co-driver) as well as Andrew Comrie-Picard, they like my idea of restoring it to where it was about 30 years ago and running rallys. To quote Christian, 'This car needs to be restored. Then add some ham radio equipment and run it as a course-opening car at the East Coast rallies! In a course car, the seats and cage will be fine. The fans would LOVE it.' So that is my plan, do a rebuild but only replace what is bad and leave all the period equipment in place.

fusername, bring a buffer Monday:)

I have a question, can anyone ID this brake setup? I thought maybe at first Ghia but in the second shot is a ghia caliper from my parts pile and it doesn't look the same. I was told maybe 914 parts?

I found this cool, that little switch under the plate in this pic...

....activates the light here, I like the proprod idea too

That big switch activates the airhorn:)

Highlift jack and some pretty funky tubes on the strut brace

Priorities, the radio is in the glovebox (sorta) and the stock radio location is the home for the ammeter and oil pressure gauge, the oil temp gauge is on the other side of the dash below the tach.

This little guy enjoyed the nuts I found packed around the crank pulley

God, this thing SMELLS inside!

Man you got some work ahead of you. It's hard to understand why someone would keep a car like that outside for 10 years. VW packrat syndrome I guess. They just won't give up their stuff sometimes...

Mine was pretty bad when I got it too. Not as bad as that one. Funny to see how much the chrome trim in the side window rubber shrunk. Good to see they left the aircleaner on it. All I can say is to do one thing to it everyday. Even if it's something small. You'll have 30 items off your list in a month and suddenly the car won't look so bad. Keep posting pics. I can't wait to see you fire up that one.

Well, I finally got the driver's door open, the latch had frozen up, soaking it in Deep Creep overnight got it loosened up finally. I'll have to replace the mechanisim, it has way too much play in it now but that is minor. I was pleased I could get the rear axle nuts off without a hernia, the next project is to try to break the drums free so I can move it around my yard easier. I'm making a list of the rusted areas to fix, though it might look bad, for a car found outside in NH, it really could be a lot worse...but I have no illusions this is going to be a buff and run.

Being a super, I suspect homemade (not ghia/t-3/OEM based) or more likely a euro model spindle.

As far as the caliper there are a few different vendors and models that are stock or stock replacement. Noting to worry about.
Yeah some may call it overkill, but you can't have too much overkill.

Still disinfecting it, there is rodent crap everywhere so I'm being very careful cleaning it up. I did mock up the lights I got for it just to feel like I'm doing something:) They are vintage KCs and Cibies.

I haven't run the VIN. I am the second owner of the car and I'm being put in contact with the POs widow. She has expressed willingness to share history and pictures with me as long as I promise to not junk the car. Works for me!

Ok, so it seems the rally odometer that was kept by the old navigator runs about $2500 for a period-correct one. Ouch. The watches for time? $400+ each. They use two. CRAP. The rally stuff is going to cost more than the resto of the car!!

I really would like to be perfect, but I think unless I can find one really really cheap, it isn't going to happen.

On the halda: build a plain box about the same size and shape, find a good picture of the real thing online and print it... then glue it on :)
You can even sacrifice a couple of old speedometers to get odometer wheels to put inside. :D

that is until you can afford the real thing...
