Hi all, I have a type 3 auto that i need to get rid of, it is in great conditon but the engine died, I rebuilt it and made it a 1914cc with an Engle W100 cam, this engine is great but i would really like to build a type 4 for it as i want practice for when i build my 2613cc type 4 for my bug, i have rebuilt 2 stock type 4's before. All up ihave four Type 4 engines, I have all the necessary parts in my shed, that i have reconditionedand, balanced, cleaned and stored. These include balanced 71mm crank, 2 litre heads, new 94 bus P&C kit, rods etc. The only thing i need would be to shorten the manifolds for the 40 IDF's and buy the bellows adapter and exhaust. The cam I have was ground in OZ from the same cam blanks as Web-cam, found this out after receiving my RAT cam last week, as it has the same stampings cast in. I bought this cam but never got the camcard, it is based on a Type 1 Engle K65, I measured the lift and included rocker ratio and valve lash and it works out to be .434 lift. As for the base circle and duration, I am still finding out how to do this.

The engine will be a 1970cc. Now from reading other peoples posts for the auto i belive i need to use a auto bus bellhousing? As for exhaust i will get a 1 5/8" 4into1 system made as i only live two kms from a respected exhaust man who loves dubs. Any suggestions and ideas greatly appreciated. Cheers Damien.

I think all you need is a T4 flex-plate.
Sounds great!

Had one years ago and thought won't ever need that and gave it to the type 4 builder up the road, i wonder if he will give it back, going there on Friday to measure crank bearing bore.

Also see if you can score some T4 factory EFI intake manifolds etc...
I don't know if CIS will fit in there with a T4, (barely does on a T3 motor, with some sawzall work) but Megasquirt is something that will work GREAT with the factory EFI manifold setup... Should rock, and fit without issues.
With an auto, don't go too berzerk on the cam.

So i have started mock up assembly of my case, crank and cam. All is working out well so far bar the camshaft gear the only size that fits the crank gear and doesn't jump out is a -4 class gear but it is magnesium, so there fore i am going to remove crank gear and try another and hopefully this will fit my -3 Aluminium gear. I am also putting Some ARP bolts in the rods too. Total cam lift is .434 i will buy some heavy duty singles cause i don't think the stock ones will agree.

Thanks Damien.

DO NOT USE THAT CAM GEAR!!!!!!!!
It is MAGNESIUM and will more than likely fail.
Buy a replacement aluminum gear and go with it, they match very well with most any crank timing gear.

Jake, wouldn't those allen head bolts on his cam eliminate some of the interference when a T1 pump is used? It looks like there is a lot of room in front of them...

I won't be using the magnesium cam gear at all, i have three stock ali ones and two aftermarket ones also. That cam gear was just used to see if clearance between oil pump and the hex bolt mod was ok it fits great, but i did buy that oil pump from Jake already modified. I will be getting an Ali one machined for the hex bolts.

I have now replaced the magnesium gear with a stock aluminium gear that i have modified, and all is good. I rotated the Crank backwards and measured at centre bearing journal on the cam and got a total of 0.30 mm lifting of the cam. Then i torqued the two case halfs together, and spun crank with each set of through bolts, no dramas at all and cam backlish is spot on also.

Cheers Damien.

Damian, I would more than likely mod a cam gear a bit differently with these, but if you are willing to send the gear.....LOL
