Just need to go direct here. I don't have a lot of time to piece this info together from different forum threads...
I'm interested in a type4 engine/tranny combo. I have a '72 super beetle and about $4k to spend. Anyone know what this can get me? Jake? This car is no longer my daily driver, I have a 99' 540i for that.
Something easier for me to tune myself would be nice. Also, how easily would this fit into my bug?
Thanksss so much guys

We take the time to write in depth conversion ifo on the website going over the install of the TIV engine. Please take the time to read this at
www.massivetype4.com
For about 4K you could get one of our engine kits for a 2056 engine and a DTM to cool it with. The "Econoheader" would barely break your budget.
As for complete engines, our prices begin at about twice what your budget allows, thats why we have these kits so all you need is a core TIV engine and the kit to put it together yourself.
The best choice for you may be one of my good running, used 1800cc engines. Then spend the money on a DTM, exhaust, carbs and etc- then tear the engine down later to make it more powerful.
I sell these good running, core engines in used condition for 1,000.00 (core value) most of them came from good cars that were converted to six cylinder power (914s) and had nothing wrong with them. I have about 5 more of these left.

Jake, thank you for your reply, I really appreciate it. I will read through the articles on the massivetype4.com site to get a better understanding of what it takes!

jake,
Are the 1.8s stock or do they have a real cam? Have they been inspected by anybody or were they a running when pulled type of thing? I am very interested if they are not bone stock. Things have changed for me and it looks like I am going to be able to keep the 914

. The glitch is that I have a VERY limited budget

for the time being. Should I Pm or E-mail you perhaps?

100% bone stock... They were pulled and sixes dropped in. All we do is leak down checks and let them go for core prices.
I have sold 20+ of these and all have worked fine, some have less than 20K miles on them.

I know very little about the type 4 mostly just what I have read from hear, Jake's and Tuna's sites. But if you were doing a conversion into a bug... would the stock cam be that big of a problem?
Seems like you are dropping a "big block" in... I know in the V8 world just the tourque gains if you go big block in a small car offset the fact that it may not be such a "hot motor".. Just wondering.

If the engine is a running stocker it's not worth the time and money to tear it down- just slap it in and drive...
Thats the only situation that I feel the stock cam is acceptable for.

I agree. If you're on a budget, run what you can. Stock cam isn't ideal, but it'll get you down the road.

Can anyone provide a estimate of one of the above engines into a stock 1973 bug. I would need everything that would not transfer over from a stock 1600. I would guess that nothing would transfer over.
Thanks

an estimate for what? TIme, Money?
The answer to either will be depending on which way you do it!

Specifically money, less expensive the better. Basically everything to get the car to run.
I had pm'd Jake prior to his fathers hospitalization, I would guess that he is focused on his father now, as I would be.

Well, to get the car to run you need:
Bug=(fill in the blank)
complete Type 4 engine=(fill in the blank)
Joe Cali conversion manual=$40
input shaft bearing=$5
proper TO bearing=$40
Cali style tin=about $20 used to buy the tin off ANOTHER type 4 engine.
914 header and muffler=$165 NEW(less used)
Work to be performed will be:
remove T4 bearing from crankshaft
install shaft bearing in a 210 or 215 bus flywheel
install proper TO bearing for 210 or 215 bus pressure plate
mount PP to flywheel
make Cali style tin
make Cali style alt stand from type I parts
shorten heater boxes and mount 914 header.
Play with pipes to make fit.
Mount muffler.
Install engine in bug.
Drive like mad!
OK, that the short version, but I think that the cheapest anyone can
put a bus motor in a bug is about $400, not including the Bug and the complete bus engine.
