Spec 'B' trans

Post by Sixty3GL »

So, I'm a couple weeks from purchasing my tranny from Jake....
will I need HD axles, or stock? anything else special I'll need? Anyone who has used Jake's trannies? It's going in a '58 German-Rat-Look beetle.

Cool.

I have found that the stock swing axles are good to at least 180 HP, unless you are running slicks..

Hmmmm, slicks
I doubt I'll ever run them. So, stock vw swing axles are good to about 180? I think I'm only putting out 150-160HP and about the same torque. I'll have to dyno it later this summer and post the results.
Thanks for your help Jake, expect my order in the next couple weeks :P

I'm running Jake's "B" transaxle with his 2270. Like he says.. "it's all in the combo", and it's really true. Jake added a Quaife LSD and I would highly recommend it for your swing axle-- it should really be a stock option on his transaxle page. I was told the HD short axles weren't necessary, but I added them anyway (Sway-a-Way) just to complete the SaW swing axle checklist.

Thanks Dave. A Quaife would would be nice but not with my budget  I'll give the stock axles a try...if they break i'll replace them.

I ran (and will continue to run) stock axles with the 3 liter..

Even at near 240 lb/ft of torque the axles are flawless..... If you want extra insurance send them this way for a 50.00 dose of cryogeni enhancement.

Would cryo'ing the super diff and spider gears be something offered on the B tranny Jake? for an IRS.

I have offered it before, but no longer. The cryo process for a tranny with as small of a profit margin as the "B" kills us in the wallet. The cryo work is time consuimng, expensive and adds more hassles than we could charge for.

Want bad ass??Open the wallet and buy the "C" tranny and a Super Hero to back it up!

Hey, it's in my wish list. ;)

I really want the B tranny for my Ghia. I was looking at the super Diff options, and having stronger or cryo'ed spider gears would be a good thing.

You won't break the B off the shelf with a 2270.

It took 7 years of hell to break mine and it finally took 235 lb/ft of torque to do it in.
