Post by turbomike »

i took off the bottom plate of mz empi deepsump.
there where three little pieces.
i looks like it was a washer. about 1inch outer diameter.
i was going to put my turbosystem on the motor. but i dont now i sould take the motor appart now. it a brandnew build 1776. i drove it for about 50 miles and motor runs good.

Check also for rockerarm washers that may have broken.

Looks like a pack of Marlboro Ulta Lights, boxed, to me.........

Oh the metal pieces, yeah looks like rocker arm spacers.
They go between the rockers and typically have the wavy springs between them.
Did you get some valvetrain noise before you stopped driving it?
Got a better picture?

3mm sounds too thick for any kind of spacer (dizzy, rocker arm, etc.) It almost has to be a lifter or the crank spacer. You could remove the heads & jugs to take a peek at the lifters,,, no special tools required. As far as books,,, I only have the good ol Haynes repair manual, How to Hot Rod a VW and How to rebuild a VW. I think the later 2 are available at CB Performance and the first can probably be found at a book store (Barnes & Noble or equiv) or an auto parts store.

3mm is .075" roughly. I've seen aftermarket rocker spacers that thick.
Maybe a head stud washer that somehow came off and got pounded and broken by the rocker arms.
Can't be a crank snap ring. Not large enough on the OD.
Looks too flat to be the head of a lifter to me.
Dizzy drive shims are not that large at the OD.
He did say about an inch or so.
Need something better than that crappy picture to determine exactly.

WOW  Can't believe that happened in 50 miles. Looks like it's time for a new cam & lifters. Who know's what happened,,, could have been a bad cam or lifters, or the wrong break in dance  I would suggest CB's lightweight lifters. I have heard good things about them and I have them w/ a CB cam in my 2332. No obvious problems so far. I'll check em out when I tear down for upgrades this winter.
