550/914 pan kit

Post by Lonster »

Is there a kit for a 550 or possibly a 356 that utilizes a 914 pan and running gear?

The answer is, YES! Many kits are available and some even make use of 914 mechanicals, ie engine/transaxle/brakes, others use subaru components or most recently audi? Have a ball looking at the following links.

I've never heard of replica kits using a 914 chassis (besides rebodies) because it isn't really a backbone chassis like a VW beetle but uses a modern spaceframe monoque chassis where the body and chassis is bascially the same unit (making it harder to customize). But alot uses it's mechanicals.

How about just a rebody kit for the 356 or 550 using the 914 as its platform?

You could surely use the engine and trans (flip the gear) and guess steering column but you'd still need a frame and suspensiopn. Tubular frame using the 914 pieces could be done.

But he's asking for use with the 914 chassis...

No rebodies for 914 to make it look like another car, just custom fenders pretty much and roadster conversions.

914 tube frame plans

Post by aussie 914 »

Hi

I'm in the same position and have all the mechanicals from a 914 without having the chassis/body.

I am hopeful of getting tube frame plans to use the 914 mechanicals in a custom framed VW.

Does anybody have drawings of a tube frame which uses the 914 rear suspension and transaxle?

If so please e-mail me at
[email protected]

cheers

One of the main part of the 914 suspension is the body. W/o the body you'll have to go full custom tube chassis in it's replacements. It maybe easier to dump the suspension and just use the tranny/motor only

This is a stripped down 914 chassis restrenghened by tubes.

914 tube frame

Post by aussie 914 »

The picture is very close to what I'm after,

Basically I want to build my own 914 tube frame and put it under a VW type 3 squareback,
but unfortuneatley I don't have a 914 body to get suspension measurements off.

I am hopeful somewill will have either;
a) chassis plans, or
b) rear suspension measurements

so i can build my own tube frame

cheers
Robert
