Hi...
I have a turbo from a Fiat Uno Turbo i.e.
and i want to put that on my engine...
My question is, how much power i can get if i change the stock crankshaft for the counterweighted, and the cam about something about 280-284º, with intercooler and a carb from a R11 Turbo (blow Through) and my 1585 cc... or any ideas of better resolution with this turbo...
thanks
My heads have 3 angle valvejob and was fully polished, stock dual ports

Not sure the size of the Fiat powerplant, but many times the smaller engines were chosen to be turbocharged...This may mean a 1000cc or so in which case the turbo would most likely be too small for any useful boost given that cam in a stock engine displacement...with a correctly sized turbo your setup can easily exceed 120 hp...Just know that the boost pressure possibly available with the uno hairdryer can lead to a nasty overboost condition...Perhaps Tracy can look up the specs on this particular unit if you feed him all the pertainet number??? Also the cam in question would most probably be too much for a small displacement street driven turbo machine...Although a strip machine capable of ten seconds in a 1600 is possible with the right setup...The drivabilty is vitually non existant....So many people start off on a project and expect to slap a few parts together that they found at the breakers and desire it to perform....while it is true a turbo from a wrecking yard can work, and quite well if suited to the car/engine/ drivetrain/ useage... the chance of an unbearable POS is quite high...Ask questions read and study all you can be fore you plunge about in the murky waters of turbocharging....Good luck and keep us informed....

thanks for your reply. Do you know of any specific combinations that work well?
my idea was something in the 12/13 sec...
The engine of turbo i.e. was 1400 cc
The IHI turbo is RHB5 (VL2)

Hi Mello.
The Uno turbo is good, but forget about the 12 - 13 sec Q-mile
If you want a reliable reasonably powerfull street/strip engine out of a stock 1600 cc., here is a good setup: All balanced of course. Stock cam, stock pistons, stock C/R. mildly ported heads, HD springs. Spend a little money on a good ignition instead of a fixed 009 or similar. Make sure that your fuel system can handle the amount of fuel nexcessary. Keep your boost to about 9 - 10 psi max. With a little luck you will wind up with about 110 - 120 hp max at around 4500 rpm. which is good, because you do´nt want to rev your stock pistons over 5300 rpms all the time, your rings woh´nt last very long then. In a street beetle this will give you a Q-m. time around 14,5 sec. So you see, it take a lot to get below 13 sec. Have fun.

Hi Farmer...
I would like to customize my 1600 with total seal piston rings, mahle pistons (85.5), counter weighted crank, full flow, Extra carter, balanced engine Cr. of 7.0, and a Ihi Turbo with intercooler and a carb from R11 turbo, I live in Spain, and are few Bettles arround here...
I have to do everything, because the machine shops d'ont have specific tools to work well...
Because that i would like to know a few things about the 1600 turbo, i was reading about lowbugget setup, and was very interesting how the car run low 14s...
About the ignition, i was thinking in MSD ignition, and boost about to 12 Psi...
Thank's

Mello, if you want 150 hp , build a 1914 stock o44 heads 120 cam 7.1 cr single 40 dcoe ....about 180 hp good for 12's in a stock weight sedan, your heads on a 1914 should be good for 140-150 hp enough to squeek into the 13s ...Surely,.You can find SOMEBODY that can bore the case for 94's? even if you have to send to JMR or? But if you build the 12-13 second car it won't be long at all before you will need a new transmission,Save up for a beefed up gearbox, you are gonna need one!!! Good Luck! and keep us up to date on your project! Happy New year!

Thank's MagOO,
Happy New Year for you too...and for all the people in this forum...
About a engine, i think your idea is very good, but i have to build a 1600, because i d'ont have much money for now...
But about a 1914cc, i could use the same turbo, or i need a big one ?
Another question, what the real difference about draw through and blow through? The same carb could work in the two ways?
About, JMR i was thinking and make a trip to Manchester and talk to him...later.
Thank's

John.
If youre on a tight budget DO NOT start building big engines. Consentrate on 1600 cc as you originally intended. If you spend the money on a CW crank & soforth, I suggest that we let the trans be the limiting factor.
A stock box will hold no more than about 150 turbo horses for a longer period of time.
So, I suggest that you get the crank, have your flywheel lightened to about 13 -14 pounds, and perhaps buy a set of Scat I beam rods from aircooled net $ 150. A bargain. Find a WEB turbo cam around 280 degrees & approx. 110 degree lobecenter. Go for a forged set of pistons. Make a good porting job on your heads along with with what you would have done to a fast reving N.A. engine. And do not lower your CR. Keep it between 7,5 & 8 - 1, because you need to help that little turbo make power. Now with ignition. Here is a nice little trick for starters. Go find an ignition from a WBX or a 2,0 bus 79 - 90 model. Dismount the vacumcan from the distributor. Now go find a vacum can from a Saab turbo before 93 (I think) Or buy it brand new. Mount that instead of the stock on the dist. and hook it up to your vacum & pressure side. Now you have made a cheap turbo distributor that workls pretty good. (Do´nt forget to adjust it.)
With this basic setup, I think I will recommend you to try and set your boost to about 9 psi. that should give you about 140 hp. in a good wide powerband, which is in the neighbourhood of what that turbo will do without overheating. Of course provided that both inlet a exhaust are properly dimensioned
That was almost a novell. I´m outa here.

John, farmer has the valid points as I mentioned about the gear box etc, but if you can't aford the 1776-1914 stay with the stock stuff, w/ a c/w crank 7 to one c/r ported stock valve heads and a stock weight flywheel.the small engine will need the extra weight ..Have the f'wheel 8 dowelled and be happy with about 110-115 or so hp any more cam than stock on 1585cc could lead to a very soggy bottom end ,just a like a six month old.... stock cam good rod bolts balanced assembly 6-8 psi max!!! you start going up on the c/r boost etc you can have problems and a guy on a budget don't need problems read all you can , weed it out and decide what you can afford and what you don't need FAST,CHEAP,RELIABLE...choose 2

In my case, i have to engines 1600 DP, one with 30000 miles and other with 80000...
I was thinking to take apart the 80000, and then make a "toy" with him...the other stay stock...
My car will be using in the sun weekend and the summer only...and the 1/4 mile...

i was curious to barge in, cuz i too! got a IHI RHB5 turbo that a friend gave me, what i would like to know is that, would a webber Progressive carb would work in this? cuz i got a 1600DP from a superbeetle, and i just want the size of the engine remain 1600,
im getting a counterwi\eighted crank and i was wondering what cam is gonna be the best to give me the most hp, my friend is gonna give me a set of heads thats 44x35.5 for free so i gonna use that, im planning to use my beetle, for street/strip, so evrything with the body will be stock, except that im gonna remove all the possible things to keep it light , like the seats and all that,
lastly i was wondering how much HP will my engine have when the set-up is complete and how will it do in the 1/4 mile?
thanx guys
i appreciate all the help!

but what gadgets and all that will i neeed in order for the turbo to be set-up like turbo timers and all that, as i have no idea!
ps. my bug is hungry , he wanna eat sum honda's or a big fat juicy CAMARO
thanx again guys,
oh and im in the philippines so things like parts are hard to cum by

hi...
Take a look on the topic "new budget turbo kit" posted by John Connolly or in the site www.aircooled.net
Your heads would be 044 with 40mm intake and 35.5 exaust...
For my engine 110-115 hp with C/W and every thing stock...(35.5/32 mm valves)
In your case maybe more...your engine can "breathe" more...
