input and output of FI fuel tank on type 1

Post by caxambas »

Can somebody indicate in a descriptive manner, which of the pipes coming out of a fuel injected super beetle fuel tank is the intake and which is the return. I am trying to figure out if they were swapped, but I have nothing to compare to..
All help appreciated.

Well..i am not so sure that my gas tank in my 74 EFI standard bug was stock..but it worked..it had a T peice on the bottom of the tank..

what does a super tank look like? i would imagine it would be the fuel line set up..

if thats the case..big line is to the pump..small line is return..

LOL sorry for the vague answer..

I'll go at a friends and cut a tank in half tomorrow. According to the fuel injection trouble shooting guide, it makes a difference if you swap the lines at the tank, and trouble I have, that's for sure,

Easy answer here ...
The output fitting on a fuel injection gas tank is the one which has the removable fitting, which also holds the mesh screen inside the fuel tank. This line goes to the fuel filter, and then to the electric pump.

The return fitting is the one which is welded/brazed to the tank.

At the frame head, I'm not sure which is which. Only matters if you get things crossed if you remove/replace the fuel pump.

front is feed, rear is return in the back.

The position of the feed and return helps me! My task now is to clean these lines out, since the car had been sitting a while. The tank had a lot of varnish, and the lines are a bit restricted, I think as one does not pass the compressed air as much as the other.
