Lower Cooling Tin---1600

Are the tins under the push rod tubes on a 72 Super Beetle 1600 enging really necassary to have on. I was told they are to keep rocks etc from hitting the push rod tubes. What purpise do they really serve? Will not haaving them on hurt or not?---Thanks
