I would like to be able to remove the muffler for special occasions -- like when my car isn't in the process of being inspected by the DMV.

I had a similar problem installing a muffler on my car. About all the space I had at the time was for a Supertrapp, and it doesn't help to quieten things down very much (95 dB). I'll be looking at installing something a little better this summer.

I had considered this, but did not think the DMV would find it acceptable. Also, there are times when I might not want to have the loudest car on my block, and a real muffler would be a good thing. But, I will probably try the Supertrapp until I figure out a way to make a quick-release muffler.

I have seen Baja style stinger setups that use springs to hold the "muffler" on the header... Mayble you could buy the stinger portion, (probably less than $30) and adapt your header to use the spring plate to hold it together. Weld your muffler of choice to the end of the stinger for a expansion chamber effect (like motorcycles, old racer's trick). Could this work?
just an idea,

Take a look at a motorscycle with a slip-over silencer, same principle is easily adaptable, and you could use bolt goig through two welded on bits of narrow ID pipes to clamp it with.

Hi
On autospeed.com they tested a exhaust butterfly. It was like throotle butterfly and on low throttle openings it almost shut reducing noise greatly, it has a control unit to help keep the noise down.
A friend of mine years ago had a thread on his tailpipe and to reduce noise he would screw on caps with different size openings. This was to pass noise tests for rallies.
I remember seeing y sections with a flap inside you could fit into your exhaust, one outlet went to open air and the other into the muffler.
