have i got this right?

hi all, toying with the idea of turboing my mildy tuned flat 4. I thought it would help if I could get the idea of turbos clear in my mind. Am I right in stating, simply, that a turbo is bolted on to the exhaust (how?), when the exhaust gases exit the turbo spins and forces air down the carb(s) by means of pipework (of some sort?) making the car go some! Is there a way of doing this cheap, any simple kits-recommended turbos, general advice? Any help greatley appreciated! pictures would be good too!!!

exhaust enters and exits out the right side and the intake come in the left and blows down
