Air Compressor from Harbor Freight???

Post by RodDuc »

Has anyone here bought one of the US General 60gal air compressors from Harbor Freight? link here: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/D ... umber=3848

Says it delivers 12.8 CFM @ 90 PSI, 14.5 CFM @ 40 PSI. I am doing a complete frame-off resto and will be doing my own painting, using a Sharpe Platinum HVLP....will this compressor deliver enough air to work well....I do not want to have to wait for the compressor to catch up!

Also want a relatively quiet compressor, friend has a Gardner-Denver that you can hold a conversation right next to it while it's running - how loud are these?

Meant to spend $500 on welder and $1000 on a compressor but ended up with a Lincoln PowerMig 200 for $900 :D that is only 1yr old, so now the compressor has to get cheaper.....or I have to wait for the resto funds to replenish themselves :(

I'd take a close look at it to find out who built the motor... chances are it may be an import or private label.

I have a similar one from HD... good thing about HD is that they have a VERY liberal return policy on tanks... I've returned several times everytime they have upgraded.

Some of the smaller tanks are mobile enough with reserve capacity.... for your painting

Any belt driven tank is about 1/2 the noise of the direct drive.

Are you hard lining your garage??? I JUST received a very cool diagragm on how to do the cleaners, oilers, chiller etc.

I remember lookingat the motor but not who built it...getting old and forgetfull. Yes, hardline definitely will be installed, really the only way to go if putting in a larger compressor-get the moisture out so the paint doesn't get screwed up. I have a good diagram already but thanks for the input!

If you're hardlining your garage...

You can consider bumping the tank down... putting a reserve tank in line (25 feet away from the compressor)... this will make it so you gain the reserve and can still move the thing.

Our 30 gallon is probably the biggest that can be moved (nail guns, working eleswhere etc).... HLVP will keep up to it.

Consider the offer on helping design the hardline for your garage... I just went to the Sharpe seminar where he showed "realistic" ways to build chillers, recirculations, reserve etc. I found 10 mistakes in our hard line system.

I have had issues with some of the HF stuff (bigger items) they buy them as commodities... when parts are needed they have to figure out what country they were made in... what item it really was... The inside desk people have a bear of a time figuring out what exactly they're selling. It is also possible that like most compressors this one may be a Campbell or IR... chances are it's more of an import at that price tag.

IDEA--have you searched for used compressors that will help for the budget. Ask around... many guys want to upgrade... the airsupply stores all have customers looking to move up... hot rod guys don't ever really use the stuff... pawn shops are filled with them.

I have that same compressor and I researched every other 60gallon sub 500 doller compressor I could find and that compressor had the best specs. It wasent the cheapest many were $430.00 so I dont believe its a cheap product. Ive never had to wait for the compressor to catch up but I havent ever tried painting with it.

Ok with a HVLP you will have no problem with that compressor. HVLP uses approx 35-40psi, so with a 60 gal tank once it is filled up no prob. I have a HVLP set up that was 3k with two 5 gal tanks. It is set up to spray a with a 1 gal pot through 20 foot hoses, so 60 gals shoud do the trick.
As for your compressor being quiet forget about it. You will be able to talk over it, but it will be loud. The idea of hardlining your garage is a good one.
Hpoe I could help
