External Cooling

I've got a DTM and I don't think I'll really need more cooling, 2056. But I do have the chance to get air flow to a ext cooler, and was thinking better safe than sorry.

should I?

I'd route it to the front of the car via copper tubing, thus also adding to the oil volume, I'd also use a thermo so it would get up to op. temps. Any advise?

Anyone running a DTM with a ext cooler?

thanks

You don't need it till you get to 2270cc or larger.. Unless you are running really short gearing and turning high RPM on the freeway..

RPM makes more of a difference in oil temp readings than anything else. RPM=FRICTION= Oil temps

Some of my 2270s never even need one with a DTM.

Personally I would say forget the extra cooling. Unless you are going to be racing at high speed for hours in a hot climate and your engine is tuned to full race.

From my experiance the T-1 fanhousing is enough to cool an engine of your size and a daily driver. The DTM will surely keep it cool and put the air in the correct places..

I am curious where is this extra air coming from, that you are so desparate to put to good use. I think Even After I am done doing my conversion I would still like to do the external oil cooler and filter. For the simple reason I will be driving around all summer in over 100 degrees of weather. Plus I am not sure when I will be able to upgrade the tranny.

Duct it to your brakes... :)

Years ago I met a guy that made scoops in the front of his bug. ran tubing into his heater channels in his trunk. The air blows out of his heater channels to ducts and up to the fan intake.
Reverse system. OK so no heat unless he has a gas heater.

Hmmm. I'm installing a 2270 C with DTM in my Speedster here in the UK.
I have a similar question of whether to go with an external oil cooler from day one or not?

(I have a 3.44 f/d in my trans-axle with 0.93 4th)

Jake, given everything else i'm doing in preparation for the fitting the engine, what do you think? Fit a cooler now and be done with it, or wait and see if its really needed in our climate?

Thanks,

Simon

Getting the oil HOT enough might be more of an issue...

If your going to run an external cooler ALWAYS run a thermostat with it. Helps it get upto temperature quickly, and prevents overcooling when its a cold day/not working hard.

You can get oil thermostats which open at different temperatures, 80oC and 90oC are the most common.
