Why wont a Stock Type 2 Exhaust fit into a type 1. I have no clue about a bus besides they look pretty cool. Is it clearence issues with the type 1 with the body or what? I was just wondering why a header would not fit. Forget about the heat option. Basically why would it fit in a 72-74 transporter but not a bug? More room in a bus ? Thanks, GLJ

It would stick WAY out the back!
Have you ever tore up your shin-bone on a trailer hitch that sticks
WAY out the back of a truck?
HURTS like HELL!

First off, the exhaust system in the Bus was designed to clear the stock fanshroud. If you put that same system in a Bug, converted to upright, it will stick out past the apron. That doesn't include the fact that the muffler is wide and straight, so it's going to act as a poor bumper.
The other side to look at is that the stock muffler is very restrictive. You are better off with getting a header/QP for a Bus and shortening the heaterboxes. You'll get better performance and aesthetically the car will look nicer.
So leave the Bus mufflers to those of us Bus owners.

So thats why everybody says to shorten the j-tubes or heater boxes from the stock exhaust. Wow, I learn something everyday. Now my tooth hurts!

Where would one find a header/QP for a bus? I guess it would be '72-74?

Anybody have any clues to what kind of exaust header I should be looking for, for the upright conversion?

I think #3319 would work, with a set of shortened 411 head pipes, or shortened heaterboxes (I gave up trying to shorten the heater boxes).
I have one of those exhausts in my garage... let me know if you want any pictures or measurments.

GLJ,
I had # 3439 or something similar from Bugpack or Thunderbird in mind. I believe one of our members here, Eddie, uses a similar header with a custom turbo muffler on his 1911cc in his Bug.

I am trying to figure out my options. If this A1 header is expensive then I will have to go budget. I have a friend who owns a muffler shop in Winder that can do the welding for me. I would love to have one of the A1 header but I have a feeling I wont be able to afford it.

Thanks tuna!

Here are some pics and measurements of that header... this one came out of a 411, I think. I shortened the head pipes 3". I am going to use the
"backbox" from
LA Performance instead of this glass pack.
I don't think this one would bolt up to a bug without some cutting... I could verify that for you as I am about to mock up my 65's engine compartment soon. Also, take a look at Joe Cali's car at
http://www.nextgen-usa.com/. I think he trimmed his fenders up to clear a similar (dual) exhaust.
