Broken exhaust stud boss

Hi. As many of you know, I've gone back and forth between T1's and T4's. When I recently installed my T4, I had to fix the outer exhaust stud on the #2 exhaust port. The repair was done by welding the broken boss back onto the head, and re-tap. The repair didn't last long as I discoverded today. The whole piece broke off. All I could do was re-tighten the opposite stud. I know that it'll get worse.

At this time there's not a whole lot that i can do. I may try one more McGiver repair. But if that doesn't work, I'll have to build a SP T1 in a hurry. That would be cheaper than doing any meaningfull repair to the head. In fact, I'd probably have to do a different pair of heads. And I don't want to dump that kind of money into the 1911. I'd rather have heater boxes, than a T4.

I really miss having heat in the bug. Unfortunately, we don't have in the T4 aftermarket heater boxes. And I don't see any being developed in the near future. I'd have to build my own. I won't install a gas heater because that's another system that I don't want in my car.

If this were a car strictly driven in the summer, I wouldn't care about heat. At this point if I take the T4 out of my daily driver, I doubt that I'll put it back in. I'll have to look at the new Aluminum cases, and go to my turbo again. I'll have heat in the winter, and J-tubes in the summer.

I know that this isn't what most of you would like to hear, but that's the deal. I had tossed around the idea of a SBC in my 914, but it'll get a built T4 instead with heater boxes. I guess I like the minimum creature comforts. The weather's been cold for California standards. I couldn't imagine driving a bug without heat in the colder states. To me this is real daily transportation, so I have to do what I have to do.

Take care,

Eddie.

I guess California "cold" probably does not warrant a gas heater system...but that really is the best way to go for heat. Ray

to fit a heater matrix from a h20 car, in the front
and have oil lines to it?

does the pressure drop too much?
are they not built to take the pressure or heat?

i've seen a few bugs with oil coolers in the front
and thought hmmm

don't porsches have them in the front wheel wells and take heat from them?

No Porsche ever heated the cabin with an oil cooler. Later 911s ran coolers in the right-front fender, but they served only to cool the oil--the warm air was exhausted out the wheel well. The 911 wrapped heat exchangers around its exhaust pipes, just like a Bug. Or a 914. A gas heater was an option for early 911s; there is a compartment built to hold one up in the front trunk.

For heat, you need a heat exchanger of some type on the exhaust, or a gas heater. You could duct air from the exhaust of an oil cooler, but that will typically take quite a long while to warm up enough to be effective. (The thermostat in my GF's 911 never opened up at all on a 1-hour drive a few days ago, and this in a mere California winter!! In a real winter....)

Hi. I had a great Sunday today. Monte called me which is always a cool thing. The weather has been bad in Cali, so he wanted to get out of town and stop by to visit. I was working on cleaning my garage, so I said come on down....

Well, knowing about this broken exhaust stud problem I have, he brought along a nice set of 2.0ltr bus heads with him for me to use if I'd like! And, a nice set of 411 pre-heater J-tube boxes for me to tinker with and convert for usage on my car! Talk about a friend man...that really makes me feel good. But that's what you can expect out of Monte.

My sister that came back into town made us some lunch, and had a great afternoon just talkin about VW's. It doesn't get any better than that!

Monte, I'll give those heads a try, and the heater boxes too. At least I have the dimensions to cut the new heater boxes to the right length. Tomorrow I'll start taking the heads apart to clean, and inspect. I'll try to polish them up too. They really look good. I'll try to take pictures. If time permits, I'll try to do everything next weekend.

Monte, hopefully we can get you a motor running soon man. I hope to be able to help you with that project. Maybe DPR can provide you with a stock 2 ltr. crank for a good price...

I could keep on going, but I'll just leave it at that for now...thanks bro.

Take care,

E.

Why, thank you, and for my next selfless act, watch me dry off a rain soaked kitten with a $20 dollar bill..........seriously, Eddie is too modest to say it, but we actually traded parts, I got a set of rods and pistons out of the deal. His bug is his only transportation to earn a living so I wanted to help him out if I could. Also, Eddie is using 48x38 heads that were built for a 2.6 "Stoplight Terror" motor he hasn't completed yet, so I am hoping the stock valve heads I gave him will work better on his mild cam 1911.

Now, about the business of cutting up another set of 411 exhaust, I hope raygreenwood isn't watching this thread...

You people would eat your mothers fingers if they were deep fried and seasoned nicely.... 8) . I'm keeping my 411 exchangers hidden from you cannibals..... . As long as there are enough for us 411/412 people...I won't yell too loud. Ray

what you are saying is i shouldn't unpick the cases off mine?
if i unpick them carefully, - shorten the tubing then shorten the cases, it will be a good idea?

Pantswagen, I won't take the boxes off the the header tubes. I'll just take off what's necessary, and then adapt the flapper controls on the heater box exit.

I'll try to post pictures.

Want to hear the worst part? I tried to sell those uncut boxes and a bus header w/cheapo glasspack at the Dec Pomona swap meet for $100.....no takers. And I wouldn't have been loosing money! The junkyard cars here are usually in great shape and rust free.......usually. The wagon that gave up those boxes was in great shape, problem was S.I.R. got to the engine years ago and that was it's demise. I also got the CV joints, stubs, and axles for offroad stuff so I feel like I made out like a bandit. 8)
