I have tried to search for posts but everytime I do it I get no results. I will soon be installing a Type 4 engine into my '72 bug and was wondering what kind of exhaust I will need and wether or not I can incorporate heat or would it be best to go with a gas heater? Thanks, Brad

Personally I feel that a gas heater from a 411/412 is the only sure way. The early bus ones may be too big capacity and size wise..

My son and I messed with modified stock heater boxes, water-cooled exhaust sections with a circulating pump, etc, but a gas heater would work SO much better.

This is the last "weak" area of T4 conversions, exhaust and heat.

So a gas heater from a 411/412 is the way to go. Is their anything specific I need to look for when buying one. I have never actually seen one work in real life. Thanks for the info

It looks/works more or less like a torpedo heater, except it has a separate intake and exhaust for heated air and burner , so all the cabin sees is hot, fresh air.

It goes where your heater coupling tubes would go from the heater boxes to the tubes under the back seat, about 5 inches/125mm in dia.

The ones from the 311/312/Bug might work, but IIRC they are much lower capacity, more designed to boost the stock heater box output than really replace it.

In Ga they might be enough...

In any case, they are all designed to take air from the fan housing, except the early bus ones, but as I said, those are a bit larger.

I found a Eberspächer BA4 for $150. I also found a few bug versions. Are any better then others? Also can you find a new one somewhere, does anybody still make them?

IIRC there is a company in Canada that sell axuillary heaters. Its called Wabsto- or somthing like that. They are used in trucks a lot. try searching the web for them.

I think it is webesto but I can find crap about them.

I did a google and found that these heaters work by heating the coolent from the radiator and run it throught the engine and heating system to pre warm the car while parked before driving.

I like the idea of gas heaters, but I rarely see one for sale that is known to work. If it doesn't work who knows what you are getting? I would just as soon Jones my own system. I don't need much heat where I live, just enough to keep the windows clear.

I looked again. The blue heat is the coolant heater. They also make gas heaters for trucks. Air Top 2000 s. Max out put is 2 KW. That is alot of heat! I clicked on the first webasto listing on Google, and followed the leads to trucks.

I believe the 411/412 is a BA4 system. Its not too hard to work on. The parts are quite robust. Its rare that parts go out but they do. If you get a system in good shape....look around and find a spare blower, fuel pump, coil and a couple relays and a couple spare glow plugs. These things will last forevere at that rate.
Its actually not as simple as just getting the chamber. There are two harnesses...small...and the chamber with glow plug, coil, blower, fuel pump, the dash switch/timer, the fuel line accumulator, the heater tube thermostat, the limit switch/probe, two large relays and the flame trap. Get one complete. There is not much that can be "rigged" around. A great heater!
Most of the heaters can be made to work....and all worked well. The BA4 on the 411/412's and the BA6...its larger but nearly identical cousin on the busses were the most complex...but technically advanced. The simpler BN series also were good ehaters. Do a search. Lots of info floating around. Ray
