flywheel cracks

hello

I took the clutch off the flywheel and found some cracks on the flywheels surface where the clutch is placed.

how do I solve this problem?

you can try and get it resurfaced.

IF it is cracked, and not just scratched, throw it away.
90% of Type 4 flywheels are cast.....not forged.

I will try to have it resurfesd , the cracks are not all the way to the other side.

Again, is it a crack or a scratch. I understand that there may be a
language difference here, but be sure you understand what I am asking.

A crack, is a crack, is a crack.......
In CAST METAL it will KEEP MOVING even after machining!

Your flywheel WILL come apart and damage the engine and transmission,
AND if anyone is standing near, THEM TOO!

you break in the engine, we like watching folks do things like that over
here in the States.....

All the Vanagon flywheels (228 mm) *I* have seen appear to be forged.
Jake has said that is not universally true.

Bus flywheels are cast. All of them. 210/215.

914 flywheels are forged, but will require some machining to work, search.

The very early 411 had a 200mm forged flywheel, probably Europe only, or at least most likely.

Kennedy Engineering sells 200mm forged units as well.. 228s too IIRC.

BTW, IMHO a flywheel that has been overheated THAT badly is junk, cast or forged.

And DO send a video link if it comes to that... We like to see the Dawin effect at work ;-)

i'm the guy who helps RAM with his t-4 project

d star - we won't use it after hearing these kind of opinions otherwise - why bother to ask? so don't go on any conclusions and blown up engines.

i understand the diffrence between crack and scratch, it has a few cracks that goes to about 1.5mm deep - it's good to know that the flywheel may be too dangerous to use BECAUSE IT"S CAST
hell, my first thought was to have it resurfaced and just use it.


anyway, we'll post some pics of it later before we finally decide to use as a doorstop.

grind a little the cracks, then weld it shut then have it machined.
it's advisable to have it heat relieved.
this is possible putting it on a lathe at low speed and heating it with a oxyacetilene flame letting it non become too much hot.
eat should be directed toward friction surface
this should work but check if it's cost compatible against a new or good used one.

Peppe, please do not suggest something like this.
It is a danger.
Somebody can get hurt if you fiddle around with cast flywheels trying to repair it.
I would not even try to repair a firged flywheel with weld.
Re-suarface but not welding on a flywheel.
The repair your talk about could be used if it was a cast exhaust manifold but are you totally ignoring the fact what a flywheel is doing.
I have seen clutches and flywheels break cars apart even if they had Lakewood safety shatter shields.
Yeah, it was extreme dragracing but guess what happens if you do not have anything to protect the grenading metal parts?
Maybe you are ok physically but if you by this hurt someone else, how will you feel mentally?
Maybe someone can bring out a picture on what happens when flywheels explode?

yes, you are right, but the cracks that are on the working surface usaully are there due to clutch slipping and are small and not deep cracks. in structural parts of the flywheel
usually these are 0.5-1mm deep and go away with the resurfacing

the deep resurfacing weakens the flywheel MORE than the little welding i speak of. however it is always better to warn about all the problems that can occur. here the eye of a professional rebuilder can help.

A professional would throw it away... If I'm surfacing a flywheel and feel a chatter I know its cracked and I stop right there and throw it out of the machine and in the scrap bin.
