That was some bad driving alright. If that was me behind the wheel I'd be dead before the end of the video. I think the only reason he misssed that last apex was so he could pass the guy on the inside

straight cut final drive gears in his tranny. straight cuts make that whine, and it just keeps getting louder. helical cut gears are massively quieter.
VW engine builders sometimes use straight cut CAM gears to reduce thust load on the cam bearings when stiffer valve springs are in play. Same idea, and can be loud too, but there the pitch of the whine goes with the engine RPM - whereas his goes with MPH.
[a lot of street transmissions have a straight cut reverse gear - which whines in the same way when you back up in hurry.]
so why do they use straight cut gears in those race trannys anyway? [or reverse in street trannys for that matter.] i mean that kind of application noise isn't much of a concern - but what's the ADVANTAGE of straight cuts in a transmission?
The gears are stronger and more efficent. At least thats what ive heard no personal experience. Its a shame their so loud or else production diffs would be much stronger.
My buddy's got an old 2002 that's just as noisey in the first couple gears. I think BMW's just have noisier gears for some reason (perhaps they ARE straight cut??)
passed 21 cars on the first lap! and 2 more before the next turn! That's just amazing. I'm going to assume that he replaced an engine or something that required him to start at the back of the field.
