Upright Cooling a CV Case?

Post by vee-wee-nut »

Ok, I know the only "kit" for a later model CV case is the 911 style, BUT, is there any reason other than the closed breather to do a Joe Cali,or Oregon Performance shroud. Couldn't I "weld up" the missing metal to fit the altenator stand on, or is there something I am missing. Looks like I'll be type 4ing a '71 before my '56 for a less expensive daily driver (the need for a second car outways my "need" for a 11 sec blown monster...for now Image). I'm looking at a mild 71X96, so I think I would be OK with a Cali style conversion. I have the book, and don't see why, other than the breather box issue, I couldnt do this to the CV case I have.

Thanx,
Casey Brown

Upright Cooling a CV Case?

Vee Wee,
To bring the CV case to specs with the
earlier open breather cases you have to
establish an open breather surface 5.5 inches above the crank centerline.
Since you will be dealing with both sides of
the case, you must split, strip and clean the case. The weld up requires machining the
surfaces where the case halves come together
as well as the top of the breather tower.
Unless you have access to a heliarc welder
and a good sized mill, you'd be better off buying a good used case. Both alternatives
require a complete teardown and reassembly.
You will have to balance the cost of welding
and machining against the cost of a used case.

If you possess the welding skills, the machine shop equipment and a bit of time, there's no reason why you couldn't use the CV case in an upright. For us mortals, this is beyond the scope of our resources. Image

Let us know how it works.
