Subaru!! Who's with me?!?

Yup....I bought a Subaru for my Baja. Anyone have any pointers, experiences?? It's an EJ22 (2.2L)

it may not be a subie engine but i am puttin a V8 on my manx. i have entered into the water cooled world now, my bro tells me that i am going to hell. just curious but how much does that 2.2 weigh?

I bet it weighs maybe 50-75 lbs more than a VeeWee. PreRunner1499 (Kevin) Helped me unload it, and he thinks it's definitely heavier. Water cooled, fuel injected, will be turbo charged, hyd lifters.......hmmm, ya, I'll keep it!

Adapter---Kennedy Engineering sells the adapter plate --- call daddy because you'll need a loan or spare first child.

If you're patient, the plates can be found on ebay and/or samba every couple of months.

Bench Test the Engine---my parents are sold on the Subaru cars... the cars are sold after 80k when they develop a tick. They've never had a problem with the cars.

Advice -- start planning how you'll boost your frame horns... we took a friends rail out with the sub engine -- twisted the horns and roached the tranny in about 5 hours --- guess we were having too much fun.

Ya Eric AKA HotRodVW got himslef a good find.

The guys that build the Tech 3 sand cars their shop is about 3 blocks away from his house.

They are using mostly turbo'd subee motors with BOG POWAHHH!!!!
They definately have them figured out. He's in good hands.

I almost think it will be fun popping stock trannys....Now That's serious POWER!! Rated for about 80 hp, put oh, let's say 250-300 to it......oh what fun!!!

I will bet you, it is considerably more then 75 lbs heavier the the VW engine. We took off all the parts that were not needed from a friend's Subi motor then bolted it onto his EMPI IMP buggy. When we took the jack out the oilpan of the motor dropped down and sat on the ground. The fix for that was an expensive set of Sway A Way torsions.

Call Kennedy and tell them your converting a Vanagon they will send you their plans for wiring harness and other stuf for free. My 2.2 suby in my Legacy has 203K on it and it dose not burn a drop of oil or tick. I actualy bought it to convert my 80 Vanagon, but have been driving the car for 2 years without a repair since--can't bring my self to decommission it. The 4 wheel drive on freeway snow is awsome.

I've been keeping my eye out for a used Kenedy plate for along time and haven't seen one. WhenI do that old kingpin pan in the back may see some action, but the Suby engine may have 1/2 miillion miles by then.

I was looking around online last night, and the Subee is only 65lbs more than a VW. Hecker Mach. also has adapters for Subee's too! I am not quite ready to do anything yet, but I like looking at options. Anyone have any pics of a Subee in a Baja????

Hey guys I am actually, as I type in the process of putting the finishing touches on our prototype buggy which is using our bolt in kit for the EJ22 Engine. We have managed to get about 80 mm of the sump and reverse the throttle body so it clears the back wall.

The engine itself weighs in about 5kg less than a type 4 engine with upright kit on it. The EJ 22 completely dressed with oil and water weights in at 115 kg the type 4 came in at 120 kg and a type 1 at 80 kg.

It is a great conversion and now we have ground clearance back it is even better. Fitting up the hotdog tommorrow and then we will fire her up for a test run.

Hey Brad - what size radiator you planning to run with that Suby - and where are you going to install it in the buggy?

I'm also very interested in the rack and pinion installation.
