Road Trip

Post by stkbus »

I just returned from a six day road trip I would like to share with everyone. My first stop was Athens, GA where I met Len Hoffman owner of Hoffman Automotive Machine. Len is a specialist in the repair of aluminum heads. I enjoyed the enthusiastic conversation, a tour of his shop and observing his head work. Len is very knowledgable of both the VW Type I and Type IV heads. I left him a set of both to work his magic on and can not wait to get them back.

My next stop was Raby's AirCooled Technology in Cleveland , GA. owned by Jake Raby. I spent five days at Jake's shop working with him on the Type I DTM testing. We assembled a Type I 2165 for this testing. The engine is based upon an aluminum case and with 10 to 1 compression produced 185 HP on the Dyno at the start of our testing. Pump it up and here it thump! The testing is in the beginining stages and far from complete but I look forward to seeing the results as it progresses. The DTM is just one example of the R & D on the cutting edge taking place at Jake's. I won't let the cat out of the bag but great things are happening!

Bottom line this was a great road trip! With what I observed and learned at these two shops top quality head and engine work is available right here in Georgia. Contact either of these two before calling the west coast. I have and will continue to.

Glad you had a good time!

I really appreciate your help over the past few days... It was hard work, especially trying to repair those issues with that new, "sorry excuse" for a crankcase!

After you left I ran the Hybrid fan @ 3 different drive ratios and the engine RAN HOTTER, just like the TIV DTM did with the hybrid fan. as I slowed the fan down it seemed to work a bit better, but even @ 1:1 it did not do as well as the stock 71+ doghose TI fan!! Just goes to show that more air is not the answer!

The TI DTM development is continuing as we speak... I have time for one my test before quiet hours and I'll see what I can do about the #4 head temp with a vane change...

I feel really great about taking over what Joe was never able to finish, making it work and then putting it to the test...

If anyone wants to be on my TI DTM mailing list email [email protected] and we'll send you updates after each round of testing is done...

Thanks Steve for your help! I love you spirit and it was a pleasure to work with another former Marine and encounter the "Issues" that we did, and resolve them using what we had at hand!!! LOL

Now that you see what life is like here... You could summarize it for the class...LOL BTW, you are one of few who have even helped me on the dyno, I hope you enjoyed it!

Jake,

Semper Fi!

It was hard to leave. I had a great time and really enjoyed working with you!
Secret sealing compound, varmit hunting, aluminum case issues and all the rest! I assume from the post that you were able to run four more tests including the stock system. How's that oil smell? LOL I tried to call but received the testing msg. Keep us all posted, best of luck and wish I was there to help. :)

Cool..... The testing showed some weaknesses in the design, BUT I have a few ideas that we'll be using tomorrow to see what happens. New vane shapes, a couple of new vanes, 2 deflectors positioned like the TIV DTM, etc...

hey, not many people get to see the Varmint huntin going on 'round here..

BTW, we found some new cylinder sealing compound.... Its Titanium based! Pretty damn sad when a case is so bad that you have to seal the cylinders with Titanium putty!
