Bad 2.2L 911 engine
Bad 2.2L 911 engine
I will probably get shot but many of you for even thinking the following but my options are limited (Money). My poor 71 Porsche 911 T has a bad engine and I need a new one. Someone mentioned that I might look into putting a type 4 engine in it's place knowing that the over-all value of the car will go down. I just want to drive it. Service cost will be lowered and replacement cost are key. Performance they say will be close. I don't have a clue as to what a type 4 engine is and if 2180 cc engine is part of the same family, but that is what was recommended. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

It is possible to install one.
I think if you can't afford to play ball, don't. A 911 isn't a cheap car, so don't ruin it (this is what you expected to hear). You would be better off selling the 911 to someone that can fix it properly. If you are near Boise, lets talk. I might want to buy it.

A friend here has a T4 in his '67 911S. Its a warmed up one with 48s and gets it on quite well. The car is set up for street/track use but not sure what class it would fit into. He has the 6 for it and will be putting it back in someday, but for now his new kid needs diapers and formula plus a college education.
Steve, you already have too many projects!

i would say hang on to it until you can afford to fix the 911s engine. of course parts cost and such and on a whole other level vs VW parts. so you might be waiting awhile. i didn't know porche made a 2.2L? i thought it went 2.0, 2.4, 2.7, 3.0, 3.3, 3.6, 3.4

Looks like every option has been mentioned.
1. Leave it alone until you can afford it.
2. Sell the 911 as is.
3. Install a Type 4 and keep/sell the engine
4. Install a Type 1 and keep/sell the engine
I'd go for #3 if possible. You could install
a Type 4 (as in 912E or upright) without
cutting the car up thus making it possible to
return the car to it's 911 status later on. I
think ALL conversions should have that ability. There will come a time when the type
of engine won't matter. The car's value will
be based on the integrity and originality of
the body and pan. That makes today's modern
rust inhibitors (Rust Mort, POR-15) the greatest silent contributors to our hobby.

Seems to me that if stuffing a Type 4 into
a 911 body is good enough for the Porsche
factory, it ought to be fine for
the average Joe to do as well. Just need to
change the emblem on the hood from 911 to
912E. If you keep the old engine, the next buyer can make up his own mind as to what he wants. Just my 2 cents.
