Berg Oil pump gasket

Post by Bill Richardson »

Which gaskets should I use with the Berg full flow pump? Know there is an o-ring on the pump body but am confused on what to use between the pump body and the case and between the pump body an the full flow cover.

Thanks.

Gasket

Bill, Just use the stock very thin gasket between pump and case and the thicker one under the cover. I always coat the thin one with oil or light grease and the outer one with flexible permatex.

I believe the thinner gasket should go under the cover. The thinnest one possible. That keeps the gears near the cover so less pressure loss. I get some nice thick ones for the pump body to block. I use a light coat of silicone on the gasket. I don't use silicone much on VW engines, but this spot is a good spot for it. I use gaskacinch on the thin gasket between the cover and the pump body.

Be carefull here. The thickness of the gasket between the pump body and the case effects the depth at which the pump drive extends into the slot in the cam gear. There is a spec for that (I don't have it handy).

Did you receive the installation instructions that comes with the Berg/Shadek oil pump? It should mention to use the stock thin gasket.
Also on the installation sheet, it does mention about measuring and pressing the depth for the pump shaft/gear to mate with the cam slot.

I resurface my pump covers and don't put a gasket between the pump and the pump cover, just a very thin smear of Curil T. Leak free.

The o-ring goes around the groove in the pump body, to seal between the case and the pump. Make sure you de-bur the hole going into the case (that the oil no longer flows through) or you will tear the o-ring when you install it. It is to help stop air from sucking into the pump from inside the crankcase.

Thanks, guys.

Thick gasket goes between case and pump and thin goes between pump and cover. Also, gaskets are different sizes so they can't be mixed up (duh!).
