CB Performance 1679 kit opinions

Post by Black77 »

I am planning on a rebuild for my 77 standard. CB has a kit with everything I need with 1679 cc's of displacement. Just want to consult the best before I drain my wallet.

If thats the slip-in 88's, then stay away from it. The extra displacement isn't worth the tin-foil thin cyliders. But, if it's the machine-in 88's, then sure, go with it. They have super thick cylinders.

I'm definitely not the best, so make sure you get a second or third opinion.

Ya, dont mess with the slip ins. If you want to get more power, get it bored for 90.5mm pistons, or 94's if you wanna go big. A mild 1776 will do quite well w/ reliabilty, gas mileage, and power. If you dont want to bore the case, just build up a 1600 with some better carbs, cam, heads and exhaust, etc..... good luck!

If you intend to keep the stock FI system a 1775 or larger is probably not advisable - nor anything more than a mild cam. I know you can run a 1679 with the stock FI without any issues but I think that's about as far as you should press it without grafting in injectors, airflow meter, etc. from a larger engine. The FI heads also have smaller valves (33x30mm instead of 35.5x32) than "normal" 1600 heads do so breathing would be poor for a big engine without upgrading them.
As Steve & Chris say, slip-in 88s are just too thin for almost every application and I wouldn't recommend slip-in 87s (1641cc) for that car either. Machine-88s are great though (if a little hard to find).
