Heater Channel drain holes

Post by russell »

Just welding on the new plates on the bottom of the heater channels on my 1970 beetle (very nearly regretting not replacing the whole channel as recommended by readers of this forum!). Question is re. the drain holes in the new plates - should these be left open or blanked off?

I just finished welding on the rb fastener panel, and I agree that it would probably be easier to replact the whold channel. However, my bottom plates are good and in each drain holes is a flat rubber stopper that has a T section molded on its back. You shove the T section in and the stopper hangs semi-snugly onto the bottom panel. I haven't seen these advertized anywhere, and from seeing the state of most old heater channels, they don't work very well either.

Well, if they are blocked, and you get moisture in them ( guaranteed by the way ), where will the water drain ? I bet the water will make it's own drain hole, similar to the ones that were created before you tore out the channels .....
