how to help paint dry faster???

Post by ress »

Hi I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to make paint dry faster. I used some spray can primer and it is taking a while to dry. I have tryed heating it with a infared heat lamp I have but it didn't really dry it. Any advice?

Lots of heat and air circulation will help flash times, but we're talking more heat than you're gonna get from one heat lamp. Too much heat will screw it up, too.

Too much air circulation can be a problem as well, as if you start circulating air, you're bound to circulate particulates.

Basically, be patient - it will dry eventually.

I've seen in the hardware store a product called: JAPAN DRIER, it is suppose to help speed up drying paint. Would this work on spray can primer?

Also you may be putting too thick of a coat. Better to put multiple thin coats then a heavy thick coat. Should speed up the drying process as well.

Also what type of infrared lamp were you using. If it's the one used for tanning or for plants, that's not the same types used in professioanl paint shops. Paint shops can get pretty hot to cure the paint faster. Use more heat lamps if it's a small one.

:D Heres hoping your primer is dry by now......if not you have a problem  What kind of primer did you use? You can dump primer on pretty heavy and it should not have a problem drying (as long as its a two part) .again what type. Rust primers do take longer to dry (I reread your post) rattle can primer ...enamal, most likely. Hopfully not trim clad. Depending on how your set up (air or no air ) it is a new proceduer up here in Canada (Vancouver area ) for priming due to inviro. reg. and that is to use a roller to put it on ,mind you its 2-part and the stuff is harder to sand smooth compared to spray but it does work and you would save a little $ and be able to build it up moreso than with a rattle can......

i suggest heating the paint up with a blow torch or waiting until the earth is closer to the sun then trying again

Make sure you shake the can well. One minute after the ball starts rattling usually does it for me. Additionally, make sure the can is at room temperature (assuming that the room is 70 degrees or higher). And like the others have said, light coats works best.
