Auto bug. Can it be done?

I was searching around, but didn't find any related posts. Has anyone every tried to fit an automatic tranny from a Type 4 into a Type 1 ? Can it be done? Personally I like shifting, but I can't ignore the possibility. Especially in Southern Cal traffic.

To my understanding anything that can physically fit on a bug is possible. Some other options are subie transaxles and newer acura transaxle might work. Its worth reasearching. It would be kinda cool to make a total luxury bug with heated seats and auto tranny and A/C. Dont forget the dvd and gps. The luxury idea kinda came from nowhere but thats ok.

This is going to bring up my question about automatic bugs... I have **heard** of automatic beetles, and talked to people that said they have owned automatic beetles, but have never actually **seen** an automatic beetle. So are these just a myth or did they really exist? I once saw a VW ad that said fully automatic and had a pic of a beetle... i wish i had that ad now...
yes i am refering to fully automatic and not autostick...

I'm pretty sure VW never made an official fully automatic Beetle. I've got a collection of autostick trannies, because I was going to swap one into my '61 Baja Bug. But I've found out there's a lot of work involved, so I might as well put that effort towards trying to swap in a fully automatic. Now if I can only find a Porsche tiptronic at a reasonable price...

Type 2, 3, and 4 automatic transmissions are all pretty much the same. The Vanagon auto tranny is also similar in design, but has some differences. An autostick from a Bug will bolt in, but it has all the extra vacuum and ATF lines, tanks, pumps, solenoids etc. that need to go with it.

Thought I heard that a T3 transmixer would fit. Have thought how slick it would be to have a fully automagic trans in a daily driver.

Autostick looks more complicated than a fullon automatic. What about the Bus/Transporters? Didn't they come in automatic? I've already been told that the type 3 trannies will not fit. I checked a diagram and found that the Type 3 chassis is slightly different than the bugs.

It depends what you mean by "fit." Anything will fit, its just a matter of how much fabrication you are willing to do..........I like bolt-on stuff myself
