My 2.0 bus motor is apart, and upon inspection, found out the heads are froma 1.8. they obviously work, as the engine ran fine according to the previous owner. I foundsome holes, two in each head, drilled on either end of the intake assembly. these holes go all the way into the exhaust chambers. are these here for a reason or did the PO do something stupid? Can these just be plugged or are my heads junk? any help would be great. thanks.

Lamp tubing, used for assembling lamps, available at any real hardware store, I got it a wal-mart IIRC once.
It's the right size & thread, and usually about 6" long.

the lamp tubing is close to the right thread, but t not the right size. lamp tubing is1/8 - 27 NPS. the injector tubes are m10 x 1.0. but why would you want to use tubing to plug a hole anyhow? a good metric hardware supply (mcmaster-carr for instance) will have the correct threaded fastener to plug the holes, or if the heads are being rebuilt, have the holes welded shut.

2.0L valve adjusters. Almost any VW supplier should carry them.

Thanks for the info all, but the PO had bolts in these holes, some of which were laying on the tin when i pulled the engine. He sadly used an SAE bolt rather that netric, so the threads are messed. But, i can certainly re-tap for metric. Question is, can I just use a metric bolt or do I need something brass rather that steel? Second, were you guys talking about plugging from the inside, or from the outside of the head. Thanks alot.

My wife says I also have holes in my head. She talks to me and it goes in one ear and out the other. I told her "you have to get my attention before speaking to me".
Fact is, my Mother also used to tell me the same thing.
Neither one seems to understand. If I'm looking at a drawing or cranking a wrench or watching a football game, how can they expect me to respond instantly? I can only concentrate on one thing at a time. Right now, I'm thinking about how I am going to disguise my $500.00 purchase of an Eaton supercharger. I've been thinking about this supercharger for months, vaquely remembering female voices attempting to get my attention.

As Chris 914 said the T-4 valve adjusting screw is a perfect match to fill the air pump hole. I went to a hardware store and bought the correct size bolt then discarded it in favor of the adjuster w/avation Permatex applied. In your case it would`nt matter what size because you are going to retap. I would however attempt a thread chaser of correct size to see if they can be revived before going farther into the process. Good luck. Bob Ingman

You can actually whak the exhaust valve if not careful..
The heads I have like that must all have been retapped... Live and learn.
