I know! :D I've been watching Reub's and Rich Olafsson's progress for the last few months. These are the cars that have inspired me, and Rich has been very helpful with loads of advice etc...

I've found the stf very informative too...

Hey Trevor,

Just how far does the WRX sump hang below the crankshaft centerline? It looks like a LOT, but haven't been able to find any numbers.
Also, anyone have the overal external dimensions on the WRX (or EJ25) engine package?

Thanks,
Jeff

This idea has been bouncing around my brain for a while, but what about converting the subie trans to rwd (or rear-engine awd for that matter)? I wonder just how impossible that would be... I mean, I know swapping a vw trans to mid engine isn't too tough, so why not? Anyone know enough about Subies to tell me, or should I go to the wrecking yard and tear into one for fun?

Jeff, I think it was BajaWes that put together a drawing that directly compared the subaru engine's dimensions to those of the VW flat four. The subaru sump hangs a good bit down there, I think he measured the difference on his drawing. Maybe he can answer your question better. Wes?

On the Turbo model the pipework for the turbo hangs just as low too, so fitting a shorter sump has no real benefit in this case...

Marv, I think that has been suggested before. I don't really know a bunch about the Subaru transmissions, so I can't say. Anything is possible if throw enough money and time at it... :D

trevor - yeah true story, money solves anything. I think I'm gonna have to go find a trashed subie transaxle and mess with it. Seems to me and all-wheel-drive old-school vw would be the ultimate perversion (and a $hit-ton of work  )!

gs guy - Wes' site lists the crank centerline to sump depth as 280mm (as opposed to 190 type1 and 200 type4). It sounds like a lot, but really 9cm, big deal, put some meats on the back, that motor will turn 'em!

90cm is nearly 4 inches, that's a fair depth.

One of my friends made some suby engine over vw engine pictures, I will ask for them and try to post them.

People I know that have mounted the EJ20 in vw's have raised the rear engine mounts (tranny mounts really) to put the whole engine and tranny on an angle to get some sort of sump clearance.

A few people have experimented with low profile wider sumps and seem to have some success, really serious people just go for a dry sump.

I guess it depends on what you are doing with it. In a baja it would be a very big deal.

I did these drawings based on measurments I took of a EJ20T. They are basically a copy of the idea that Wes came up with for his conversion :) guess engineers have a use afterall lol I got the images from the SAE paper on the EJ20T that covers the engine in detail. Anyway move it up and in and it fits :) just ! Image Image

I got the adapter from DS Tuning delivered today. It's thinner than I was expecting at about 10mm or so, and the Porsche flywheel I sourced from Mike Ghia has been modified heavily to increase its spacing away from the engine and into the bell housing.
Both items are top quality, I will post pics in the next few days. Watch this space...

Anyone know what starter works with a Porsche 915 transmission?

Trev,
You could try a 915 starter! If the 911 ring gear is used on your new flywheel, that's the one to go for. Although, I believe there are others that will also fit....

Trevor,

Do you have contact information / website for DS tuning ?

Thanks,

Rob.
