i have on a 72 bus a CF gearbox. this was originally a 1300 AB dualport engined bus
on another bus i have a CE gearbox. is it longer as ratio?
the CF now has a 1776 single port and "wants the 5th" ....)))
where can i find gearbox codes vs ratio for bay window bus?

Hi Peppe, just a couple of points I can perhaps help with,CE gearbox code is just a stock 1600 Bay window bus gearbox code from the early 70s,I cannot give a specific year or years, but I have come across it many times,I suspect that there is little difference between CE and CF boxes,in terms of ratios. All air cooled VWs left the factory with 4 speed geerboxes.(Autos aside)no 5 speed has ever been offered.
As for you comment that your bus was originally running an AB 1300 twinport,I'm sure this is a mistake,in over 15 yrs of being a hardcore VW nut,I have never seen or heard of the any bus leaving the factory with a 1300 engine. AB is correct however for a 1300TP engine, usually found in type 1s,I suspect the engine was retrofitted after being removed from a dead bug.
I hope this helps some.
Cheers Andy.

sorry, but in italy 1300cc buses have been sold. i know that these were specials for italy and greece due to tax reasons. have seen many of these.
i know also that there are no gearboxes for bays with 5 speed , so i want to compensate for the lack of 5th with a slighty longer gearbox. thanks

Hi' PEPPE...
Took a peek in my book's.
The CE - box diff. has 7 : 38 ( P / R ) and the CF - box has 7 : 41 ( P / R ).
The CF - box is also listed with the M92 code ( Gebirgsübersetzung / Moutan gearing )
Enjoy...

Hi' Peppe..
I think you get the highest ratio ( 7 : 32 ) from the CP - box that was used on the 2.0L buses.

In America ( USA) the fourth gear ratio changed in 1976 with the introduction of the 2 litre. The final drive ratio was taller, 4.57:1, but the fourth gear ratio was dropped to .89 from .82. The reason they did this was to shorten the gap between third and fourth with the new taller rear axle ratio and to keep the top speed engine rpms roughly the same as the earlier 1800 engine.
