Rollbar extension for Front??

Post by JP_in_STL »

I managed to score an original 5-PT RollBar and SwingAway Spare Tire Carrier from a neglected Thing only 2 blocks from my house for $500 last Spring. Not a stellar deal, but not bad for the MidWest. A year later I'm finally getting around to thinking about installing them :-(

Has anyone made a front extension for the stock Rollbar?? Ideally I'd like a hoop that follows the windshield contour with 2 stringers that run back to the stock bar along the center. Then I was thinking I'd just install the stereo in an overhead console between the stringers like the Jeep guys do :-) If I ran the stringers along the outside by the door it would be stronger, but then I'd be whacking my head getting in and out. I'm not needing all out crash protection with a full cage since I don't run Baja as my offroading involves trips to the campsite or the river.

I've seen Things with full cages so I know front hoops have been made. Any chance there's a supplier in So Cal that sells front hoops?? I guess I could try to track down a racecar fabricator here in St. Louis and have it custom made. Maybe the Thing Shop should sell these?? :-) If I could find a front hoop I could handle the rest since the stringers would be straight sections. I have a welder and such, just no bender.
