hello all,

i'm in the process of rebuilding my 1600 dp engine. everything is stock except that i'm bolting in a pair of dual drlas. i was thinking of the headwork to put in my 043 heads.
my questions are:
1. how to port and polish heads?
2. i could get a dremel but i have no idea what bits to use. i will be practicing on an old pair first before the 043s.
3. how does one flycut a stock head? i want to bump up the compression a bit from what i guess is a very low cr. i will be having a machine shop do it for me but i just wanted to know so that i won't be ignorant of what they will be doing to my heads. particularly which part of the head will be "flycut?"

Maxyboyvw, check out the tech info at www.cal-look.com If you got some more ?'s give me a holler here on this forum. I'm NOT an expert but have done some P/P work.

My advise is to have it done or leave them stock. If you want better heads buy a better set. 99% of the people that do head work, screw them up. Also keep the ex valve size stock and the larger intake will only help if it a high speed motor with counter weighted crank. Vic. www.1800vw.com

I don't think that 99% of home cylinder head porters fail IF they limit their work to what has been proven to work by others and stick to that!

thanks john, i'll try to find port and polish stuff first. i will definitely ask for your help when i get everything in order. i will practice on an old set first before doing the new one. i just want a little more umph on my otherwise stock 1600.

Maybe you can find Bill Fisher's "How to Hot Rod Your VW" book. Don't know what the scene is like for ACVW"s in the PI but if you could find that book, it will show you alot.

Yea, I was just gonna reccomend Bill Fishers book too.
I followed the instructions on head porting closely on my first port job years ago and was amazed at the difference! The only part you need to go to a machine shop for is for a 3 angle valve job and back cutting the intake valves.
There is some good eye-opening info in Gene Bergs tech books also. Don't be afraid to do your own port work if you are armed with this info.
These stock valved heads were on a well tuned 40 Webered 1600 that would pull 100 mph up a steep inclined highway when most cars slowed to 50. Top end was 115 with 3 people(stupid I know).
