Since it seems you're already familiar with how to build a stock VW engine yourself, I'd suggest getting the Gene Berg Tech articles that deal with engines heads, compression ratio, deck height, cylinders, etc. Also, Keith Seume's manual (something like "VW Performance Handbook") gives an all-round idea not only of engine modifications, but upgrades to brakes, suspension and transmissions tht should also be considered. It was recently on sale at wwww.motorbooks.com

Some of the popular books, which I have a few of, are pretty dated. The tricks of yesteryear aren't near as good as the ones today. Anybody know of any decent books from the last few years?

Gene's articles and website are an excellent source of info. Just take his "lawnmower" CR recommendations with a grain of salt. Compression = power. If you take the steps to maximize cooling and choose your components carefully, you can go much higher. If you want your case/bearings to last a few hundred thousand miles, stick to a low CR 1600 and wave to all the nice old ladies that are blowing your doors off.

I am getting ready to start my first Hi-Po engine build, and was wondering what books/manuals would be good reference material? I have the Bentley, and The Idiot Guide. I am looking for something more oriented towards High Performance engine building.

The other "bible" of hi-po VW engine building was first published about over 30 years ago, but has good sections on cylinder head modifications, oil pumps, cams, etc- that would be Bill Fisher's book "How to Hotrod VW Engines".
