Have a chance to buy a porsche 911 5 speed transmission for cheap. What do I have to do to make it fit in my thing. Is it a easy nose cone swap? Is it worth doing?
Thanks Jesse

Jesse what model # trans and from which year 911? Most thing guys like to go with the T-2 trans for better off-road gearing. Those that like the five speed usually convert a T-1 trans to the five speed. Bob Ingman

I looked into it on the cal look web page. Seems like a pain in the butt just going to keep my eye out for a T-2. Still a long way off on putting the trans back in so I have a lot of time to look.

Jesse as I said there is always the choice of going to the t-2 conversion or spending the money to improve your existing Thing gearbox. It is a good one not needing a lot of work to make it better. Good luck. Bob Ingman

Easy Answer
If the Porsche box is that good a buy, buy it, then sell it at a profit and buy a rebuilt bus box with the proceeds. The Porsche box will not appreciate off road use and repairs are very expensive. Plus adapting may be a new set of problems.
It's a win-win situation.

Probably the only transmission that would fit your engine would be the five speed from a 1964 to 1968 911 or 1966 to 1968 912 optional. The Porsche transmission is far stronger than vws from the same years. Actualy its been used offen for kit cars with v8s. I would say go for it.
