I recently purchased my first 73 Thing for $800-!!
-Condition: No Top, Bad Paint Job, Litlle Rust, Good Motor(all stock 1600;I think.) & BAD Carbuetor.

-PROJECTS COMPLETED: 1. COMPLETE BRAKE JOB 2.REWIRE 3. NEW IGNITION SWITCH

-FUTURE PROJECTS AND QUESTIONS: 1. Dual Kads Carb. Kit; if I change to duals, do I need to do anything to my motor?
2. Rims; Is there a perferred bolt pattern (5 or 4, and what is the best bran conversion kit for the buck$$$$ ?

NEEDS & WANTS: Sun Visor, One set of passenger mounting brackets and swimg bar.I am custom making my own visor out of solid tinted plexi glass, therefor no need for any interior wire.

Congratulations on the Thing find and being wise enough to pick it up. Welcome to the list as well.
Dual carbs work well on a stock engine if they are not too big. Kadrons come to mind immediatly because they have a reputation for their blend of economy and reliability. You might have to use a centrifical advance distributor with them but no other changes. If you can find a good used set of baby Dells I would recomend these as well . Weber also has a 34 ICT intended for small displacement engines.
The wide five (stock) bolt pattern is definately the prefered pattern for wheels. Most guys change to a 15" size if they set up for off-road or prerunner types. The 15" wheel gives a little more ground clearance and more importantly it is very difficuly to find aggressive heavy duty tires of 14" diameter.
Keep posting. Have you been through the old post or done a search through the archives? We heve a parts thread here for Thing specific items we use . Also the parts wanted and for sale here on the STF are good for buying and selling

Sounds like a great deal. Welcome to the list. So what are your plans for it. Are you going for a stock look or are you going to modify and offroad it?

Miles apart and we both got just about the same deal!
