mid-engine sub frame

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

mid-engine sub frame

I'd like to run a mid engine T4 motor/trans in a street car. I though you guys might be a good source for info on a sub frame that would allow me to do just that. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Eric Martin from A&e Auto and Machining makes custom chassis specializing in VW chassis replacements. He makes really nice mid-engine replacement cahssis also and can make it in almost any length, width, etc. He can set it up using mustang 2 suspension or stock VW and engine mounted normally or sideways. Expect about $2500 +/- for bare chassis (no suspension) to $$$$ for full setup including suspension/chassis/tranny already set up. I haven't talked to him in a couple years but he still should be doing this (his side job during cold season on his farm). [email protected] or 785-225-6774 I'll be eventually ordering a mid engine dunebuggy chassis from him when I'm ready (hopefully next year)

Yeah GDRBO I think your right I am in DIY land-I don't think I'm ready for this. I'll have to turn to kits cars and see what they might be doing.

Thanks for the help NICANOR I sent him an e-mail earlier and I didn't hear back.

Rmcelroy, Just a thought here but this 550 Spyder kit is built on a tubular sub-frame and is mid engined. Jake Raby builds big T-4 engines for these guys. There was a thread recently on t-4 forum that went into it. http://www.thunderranch.com/5501.htm
Good Luck. Bob

Here's the picts that guy sent me:

Keep in mind he's a farmer by trade and only does a few chassis per year. Not sure how often he gets on the internet. I talked to him a few times on the phone. Very nice guy and knows how to make chassis and alot of development in his hands. I got picts of a rear engine chassis too if anyone wants me to post them up too.

Regie you are in do-it-yourself country. The only car to use a type 4 in mid-engine configuration is the 914 Porsche and I don't believe they had a sub-frame. None of the front drive sub-frame cars would, in my opinion, be suitable due to location of motor mounts among other concerns. It looks like time to get out the heavy fabrication tools and get after it!

Not that I really mind but why are we dealing with a mid-engine street chassis in the Off-Road forum?

Only because off road guys seem to have a lot of mid-engine frames, and might have sources. You guys already are in tune with the advantages of the mid engine layout-a configuration I think should apply to the street.
Besides I asked around on some other pages on this forum and got almost zero response-the fact that I found people interested says I asked the right people.

Thanks for your patience all.
