This is a tough decision. The CB, a 1700, has the flywheel you'll need, the 8mm rocker arms, and the open breather tower (which is easier to convert to upright). The 1.7 heads also have the earlier style exhaust ports and have a slightly larger intake valves (39.3x33).
The CV, a Vanagon 2000, has the longer stroke crank, 2.0 rods, and 94mm piston/cylinders. The downside of this engine is that the breather tower is enclosed, making it difficult to convert to upright cooling. The flywheel (228mm) is too large for a Type 1 bellhousing, the heads have the smallest valves (37.5x33), and the exhaust ports exclude the use of most aftermarket systems.
So, you can tell I'm voting to getting the CB engine. It will get you more of the parts you'll need to get the engine into your car.

tuna, thanks for the information, both engines are located in a local salvage yard the 73 engine is sitting in the back of the bus and the vanagon one is still hooked up is there anything that I could look for to check the condition of the engine before I buy it?
thanks

Which engine is best
I have decided on the cb mostly from the information given in regards to my question and from reading further into the posts on this forum. I would like to know if there is anything that I can check for either visually of by hand on the engine that would tell me if it is any good.
I.E. Does it turn freely by hand,
To much rust, does it have all the engine tin, Do I need the tin if I am converting to upright?

VW62rag, the "best" type 4 motor period varies depending on who you ask.
From one perspective, the "best" one is the one in your own car.
From another perspective, it's Moggy's monster supercharged motor.
From still another, it's the 3-liter-plus motor that Jake is going to build.
From yet another (most power from a stock motor) it's a Euro-spec 2.0 914 motor, with 100 DIN HP.
If you're talking bang-for-the-buck, then a 1.7 motor probably wins. You can find them for relatively cheap from 914 folk in particular.
Just about any Type IV motor can serve as the basis for a moderately-large motor. The cases are just about all the same (small differences in dipstick, oil filler, and oil breater; single-relief vs. dual-relief; etc.) and you can build any displacement Type IV on any Type IV case.
So, from that perspective, the answer to "which one is best" is a simple "Yes, it is!!"

I would go with the cb engine as well. There are a lot more parts available...and if you had to make a 2.0...its just about as easy to find or make a 2.0 crank. Ray

The best thing I have found is a 2270, without a doubt....Bigger is not alwys better, just more expensive..
I'm doing a 3.6 liter just to see if I can make it work and stay together, its not the best engine, thats not my goal..
The 2270 is best in my opinion because the power is simpler to make, no crazy machine work is needed and just after 2.3 liters the heads are close to getting maxxed out..
I build atleast 40 2270 engines each year for everything from Buggies, to ovals, to 914s, THEY ROCK.....and I have 8 proven combos of them, 3 of which are damn near mechanically perfect! Its all in the combo.

Tuna,
can I use the heads from the 1.7 or a 1.8 on the 2.0 engine. What kind of work would that take if it can be done? when you said the tower would need to be machined down for the conversion about how much work would that be? Where could I get that done?

The heads from a 1.8 will slip right onto a 2.0 engine. The heads from a 1.7 will have to have the cylinder bores enlarged to enable it to fit over the 2.0 cylinders.
As for the crankcase and machining down the towers, the only shop I've talked to about this was Raby's Aircooled Technology. Basically they have to machine down the tower to match the earlier style tower, or in the case of a 911 fan, machine it all the way down.

The breather machien work is in FAT Performance catalog if you live in CA. I think Rimco will do it also. I rember reading it.
Cores are prety cheep at swap meats $100 or less.
Rebuilt cranks and rods are cheep, DPR Machine(714-979-7441) agin if your in CA.
Look for the heads and case and flyweel you want.
This manual has definate ideas for stock anyway. http://home.att.net/~NEXTGEN/

pardon the ignorance, but what is a breather tower? also, is there a link that one of you guys can provide so that i can stop asking what i'm sure must be considered a retarded question, like ... what is a breather tower? anything with an exploded or anotated diagram of an air-cooled engine would be greatly appreciated.
thanks

The red circle on the right hand side is circling a part of the breather tower in this picture:

The 228 flywheel CAN be made to work in a bug transmission, but some moderately heavy voodoo is required.
See other thread:

Worth it? The Vanagon flywheel and 914 flywheel are FORGED, so if you are racing, the mods may be worth it.
Or if that's all you HAVE, my excuse.

Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.
