Yup, well think of it this way. The Bus is a heavier vehicle so VW made the internals bigger in the Bus tranny to handle the extra load. The reduction boxes are only on the early shiz. Those Busses actually had a typeI (Bug) tranny in em running a flipped ring gear. The ones we talk about are 68' and later (correct me if the year is wrong). They come in "three rib" for the early ones and "five rib" for the later ones.

There a 3-rib (1600/1700), 5-rib (1800) 002 and 6 rib (2lt) 091.

Yes I would use a bus box. I am using an aftermarket 0.70:1 4th to allow some serious highway cruising.

Here in the states the 002 is refered as a 3 rib and the 091 is the 5 rib respectively. Depending on where you get them you can pay $50-300 but usually about $100 er so for most used ones. I got my 3 rib for $50 and paid $750 for a rebuild.

I think your wrong.
The link I posted is a US site, and he refers to them as I have. I think whoever gave you your information has confused you.
There are 3 main types of type 2 gearboxes;
1600/1700 3-rib design - Used between 68 and 73 I believe. Sometimes called the 002. These have extremely low gearing (5.375 or 5.42 R&P). Because of this they are also the weakest of the bus boxes, but still stronger than a beetle box. An excellent gearbox for smaller engines.
1800 5-rib design - Used between 73 1/2 and 75. Also called the 002. These have a 4.875 ring and pinion which is also quite low but alot stronger. An excellent gearbox for those with a bit more HP than standard. I was happily running one of these with my 1915cc engine.

2 litre 6-rib design - Used from 76 onwards. Also called the 091. These have a 4.57 R&P. If you have a lot of HP, this is what you want as this is by far the strongest of them all. It has bigger just about everything in it. You can also get a Vanagon 4 spider differential from the real late models of this box.

KG68 The shops in Pottstown are not stores so to say just repair but they can get you parts. I have only been in the area for about year & 1/2 o not sure where St. Peter Village is. One shop is called RPMs off of Hanover and High St. the other is alittle further down Hanover towards Norco. not sure of name though. KG68 what doyou have?

I have a 1968 Karmann Ghia, hence the name KG68. I bought the ghia from rpms. $250. such a deal. There is shop out near the Reading airport that does some amazing work. THe guy that works there drives a chopped flat black bug with a fake fur zebra interrior and some teeki stuff. In his shop he has a couple of old slingshots with hemis and one with a blown small block. He has two old choopers too one triumph one harley. I found it by accident. The mailbox has flames and there isn't a sign out. It says by appointment only painted on the door with a pinstriping brush. In the shop when I was there he had a 41 merc chooped and channeld and a dirt track 32' ford with a cage and a flatty and a bangin a bone pickem up. far out. THe only problem is I have no frickin idea how to get back there.
