i am in the process of building what is to me a GTI beetle. the way I would have produced them along with the water cooled line..

rad mount is going to be in a mod'd engine lid. to support the radiator in a similiar fashion to the Whale tails they race in germany.. and kinda like Vwdragon's .. though I am shooting for alitle neater.. his is quite nice.. and a hellava VW.

I'll keep you all posted over winter and maybe pics.

it's going to be semi german/cal look.. 1.8 big valved gti motor. heat, A/C, PW,PL,cruise.. and hopefully a sweet @ss interior..

Yes, but the baja doesn't really ever go anywhere unless it's winter time and then it actually helps. I've run it in the summer time also and it didn't act any differently.

Oh ok. I'm currently looking for a place to mount my rad right next to where the engine will be in my baja. I already have the engine, radiator, shroud and fan, bus trans (installed before I got the car), pushbar large enough to sort of protect almost any engine, and beefed up horns with what looks like extra metal here and there for strength. I've got a few pictures here: http://www.geocities.com/cd23c/cars.html#mbaja . I still need a KEP adaptor, auto counterbalance, oil cooler, oil lines, maybe a new clutch (I've got to get the 1600 out and take a look at the disc and pressure plate, and to see if they're 200mm), exhaust manifold, heat shielding, fuel pump, etc.

I'm just wondering if the radiator should go in the back, or on the side like your baja. Oh, I'm also going to be installing a heater core up front for lots o' heat!

Did you check out my "heater"? You don't have to worry about "shrinkage" with a heater like that.....You also don't have to worry about wearing a coat while driving. Call KEP and find out how much for one of the adapters they make then call Phil http://www.philsbugshack.homestead.com/ ... shack.html and see what he'll make you one for. Quality is just as good if not better than KEP and he's a lot cheaper (last I checked anyway).

VWDragon, that's one serious heater!

I've got a question about the airflow direction in the back of a baja. Since yours is blowing on the engine, does that work with the natural aerodynamics back there? Or do you suspect it might possibly be fighting against a tendancy to flow away from the engine? I have no idea how the air flows in the back of a baja since pretty much all the stock airflow ducting gets removed with a baja kit.

I've been comparing mounting the radiator in the back directly behind the engine to try to take advantage of ram-air when I'm doing 40mph or above, to just mounting it on the side of the engine like yours. Mounting in the back means less fan usage, but also opens up the rad to sticks and rocks when offroading. But then again, I don't know how the air flows back there, and I've got a tow ball hookup that would block 2/5 of my fan if it was running in puller mode. The fan can be used as either a pusher or a puller, but is probably more efficient as a puller.

Your baja looks great with the rad on the side. I just wonder if mine would do better on the side too. It's not like I'll be doing 40mph in the woods! Anyway, the 13B rotary I'll be using doesn't have anything hanging off that side of the engine other than spark plug wires. I'll just need enough room to access them and everything else on that side should still be accessable too. Thoughts?

Air flow is alright there (not great, but not bad either) and you could always run down to a hardware store and grab one of those cheapo paint roller pans and cut one end off (long end) and just fab up some quick mounting areas and it will pull all the air you want into it and help protect it from flying debris. The problem I have with putting it in the back is this....The only thing you have protecting the radiator is the motor if something is flying at it (tree branch, rocks, etc etc) not to mention mud splashing onto it and covering it and not letting any air go through at all (been there, done that). Back to the airflow......As the air comes around the side of the baja, it comes around towards the motor. So, with my radiator mounted there, the fan doesn't come on all that much except in the summer time, but what water cooled car doesn't? If you want some better pics of the radiator (and the paint roller forced air ducting ) I'll be happy to take them and either put them on my site or send them to you in email!
