I got a spare piston from a friend recently. It is off a Lycoming airplane engine. I measured it and it is a 130mm. I think that it would be hard to get that size to work on a T-I let alone a T-4 due to the bore spacing. But it makes you think though 130mm*82mm=4354cc. That's bigger than some V8s.

I'm stuffing 110+ mm pistons in a TIV enine, the bore spacing has been changed, though....

What does your displacement turn out being? That type IV stuff is pretty expensive when you get into big diameter pistons, right?

Jake, how do you mean change the bore spacings?
Has the case been lengthened?
If so, how does everything else work?

goat, at the beginning of this forum, there was a person used lycomming parts for a type four motor. i was wondering if you know or if possible what parts could fit. i think he used aircraft cylinder heads, cylinders, and a titanium cam. whats you thoughts or opinion.

Instead of using parts from an aircraft engine I would probably just use the whole engine. The piston that I have is damn heavy maybe two or three pounds. As far as using aero parts try getting a rod that can hang on to that couple pound piston at six grand. The aircraft engines are insanely expensive. You could probably gold plate all the parts in a VW and still be cheaper than a Lycoming. If an engine swap was in order I'd go with a Subaru, inline four, or rotary.

I'm saving upto get a mill. Is there any range, model or place to get them from that you would reccomend?

So is it really worth changing the bore spacing? IMO you can get more than enough power out of a large displacement motor with a turbo or NOS. Plus it would be cheaper per pony.

Changing the bore spacing is a real pain in the ass. Al I can say is invest in a big mill and learn how to use it really well, then try to figure it out...This one is one of those that I just gotta keep to my self...

But then where's the challenge in that? Jake's project sounds like a real challenge to re-engineer the Type 4 case and crank among other things that will be sure to give him plenty to smile about if it all works out. Of course there will probably be lots of hair pulling along the way to success...

Iv'e got a whole Continantal aircraft (o-470) engine, 6 cylinder everything apart from the crank.I also have a 1600dp justw aiting to be "over sized". Any idea with all these parts how to make iot work.

I'm not knocking the ingenuity just or the satisfaction in the end, but it seems like an awful lot of work. Speaking of a bit of work my boss is talking about putting out a crankshaft with a 94mm stroke. It seems a little overkill but what the hell.

I work at Precision Alloy, we make one of the all aluminum cases, as well as Bus to Bug stub axles and a bunch of other off-road race type stuff. I believe that he was talking about using it in one of our cases. But for now it is just a thought, we have quite a bit of work to do before we can get a new product out there. I'll let you know if it becomes more of a reality though.
