after living in the mid engine world for a few years, here are some things i have found good and bad.
good-- handling is only limited by the ability of the tires! wheel hop isn't an issue. hydraulic clutch makes even a stiff clutch easy to deal with.
bad-- there is nothing 'off the shelf ready' when you break something. and, don't buy a cable shifter for the car!!! they are sloppy and hard on the nose cone. get a replacement nose cone unit from Jamar or Prowler's!
well, i hope this little diatribe helps.

I wish I did - I found that by searching through Google... I know there was an article published in late 69 or early 70, 1 or 2 pages I think - at least 2 of those pics. I'm not sure what Mag it was, though...

You can use a T25 transmission for it's hydraulic clutch... the bellhousing is the same as the T2 bellhousing... just with different parts bolted to it.
I'm using Porsche parts for mid-mounting. The 915 box can be converted to a 916 trans as was used in the Porsche 916. This is a side shift mechanism and rod.
I do have the problem of getting air to the engine though. I'll start off with NACA ducts in the rear 1/4 windows.

I couldn't agree more, but a mid engined 3.8 litre flat 8 (2x1600) in a bug body probably was pretty darn quick...

hey mike ghia, i just rerouted air to my midengine from under the car using 10cm aluminumn flexy hose. it dropped my oil temps dramatically and best of all you can't see the ducting unless you....well, duck!

to put in a vw engine in the middle would you just turn it backwards like they do some of the sand rails. i have never seen this done bfore and how would you shift.

bugboy,
you have just have to flip the ring and pinion in the stocker tranny and turn the whole thing around... I love mine! shifting is done with a VW midengine unit and hydraulic clutch.
