nissan v-6?
I don't know an awful lot about Nissan V6 engines although they seem to be fairly reliable.
Here in South Africa they use them a lot in small tow trucks.
I'm busy putting a Ford V6 3.0 liter engine in a bug at the moment using a mid-engine configuration.
That way I can transfer some weight to the front of the car and get better road handling.
What are you exactly planning to do?

what exactly am i planning to do? good question... hmmm....
i'd like to put it in my 71 SB convertible with a 914 transmission. i was wondering if anyone had anything nice/not so nice to say about the engine. on another bbs, the ricers all seem to think its a great motor. (but that just means i can do a clear taillight upgrade and make it go faster)

My dad has a Nissan Quest with a v-6. It's nice, lots of torque and good top end too. The acceleration is excellent considering the weight. In a Bug the power would be mind boggling. Get a manual and look what is involved in getting it wired. I have wiring hell to look forward to when I wire up my Bug/Subaru.

Hi Paul, how are you getting to a mid-engine layout? Are you going to fab up a frame? I've been thinking about a mid engine layout myself-but don't have the facilities/experience to build a frame from scratch.
Thanks

Dude the VG30 is a good little engine but pricey I had the non-pleasure of changine one in my nissan 4X4.....Personally I would consider other options of the aircooled type simply so you don't have to run radiator and all that humbug ....If you still go with the VG30 I would love to see it in action keep us posted...Good Luck

Nissan makes a good product - you can thouroughly abuse them without recourse. You don't say what V-6. The nissan truck v-6's make considerably less than the toyota conterparts.

i ended up not getting the motor...
i couldnt get the computer and harness for it from the owner, and none of the area junkyards had them. it was a v-6 from a 96 altima. VTQ30 or something like that, 190HP or so. would have been nice.
instead i now have a line on a chevy 305 TPI from an iroc, but i need to run that mid engine, and i'm not sure i want to go *that* far with the project unless i can just chop a 914 frame and weld the back half to a super beetle front half.
IF the 914 i am taking delivery of has a good frame (it may be shot) is this possible with the 914 suspension setup? i'm thinking it would be hard because of the rear suspension design, but ive never taken a close look at a 914.

Not that it matters since you didn't get it, but I think you mean it was from a Maxima, not an Altima since 2002 is the first year Altima's have V-6's.
If you're going to go with a computer controled engine - make sure you have access to the origional car and can take all the wiring you need (if you're not sure if you need it - take it). That's common advice you'll hear from people with VW's, Rods, 4x4's ect.
You might think twice about the 305 - all the weight of a 350 without all the power. That 305 probably weighs a couple hundred pounds more than the nissan engine you were looking at and puts out less power. Just a thought....

Just a suggestion, but kep has a kit for the chevy lumina 2.8 v-6, A friend down in so-cal did this on his vwthing, with great results, It looks very nice in flat black, with chrome accents, and has proven very reliable (a couple trips to our sacramento bugorama from L.A. with no overheating) He hid the radiator on top of the tranny with an electric fan. If you have the new hot v-dubs, It has a picture of a yellow ford looka-like and next to it is his 1st place winning big green thing. If you want more details on the swap just ask

yep, the frame is totally shot in the 914. *shrugs* thats okay, i didnt want to do all that work anyways. hehe. i'm still probably getting the 305, but i'll save it for another project somewhere else down the line.
youre right i did mean maxima, not altima.
i think for the time being i'm going to put in the 914 running gear. the car only has the 1.7 engine in it, but... *shrugs* i'll live with it for the time being, unless i can find some cheap parts to build it up. i have to pull the motor apart anyways because the rings are shot. i want to put carbs on it too since i dont feel like tinkering with FI.
too many ideas and not enough space or money! blecch. i need to become independently wealthy.

I cut the rear suspension out of a 914 and am in the progress of fitting it to the Beetle body. I grafted a piece of 3/16 plate to the bottom of the pan, welded it and thenbolted it up through the pan into the body. The suspension is a little wide, but I think the a frames will attach underneath the running boards. I have the rear seat area cut out of the body and have the 914 clip jacked underneath it. I think I'll have to really brace the body well, and may end up with some sort of a rear subframe.
