h2o VR6 in rear of beetle?

Has anyone seen this done. Can it be done and fit with the rear lid closed (maybe relocating body on frame). I know weight will be a big issue along with major frame mods....any help with this would be great

Troy, If you are going to add this kind of engine, I'd mount it just behind the rear seat and use the gearbox it uses in the Golf/Carrado. It will almost give you a mid-mounted engine and trans combo for good handling and you get a 5 speed box too which will take the power.
You might even be able to get the rear seat back down on top of it when you've finished.

Yes ghia im thinking the same thing. Im not sure that i would want to put that kind of power to a beetle trans. Im still looking into where the VR6 would have to sit and how much room i would have. If anyone else has ever seen a VR6 in a bug and would have pics, that would be great

I've been dreaming about the same thing for a few years now. I have done some preliminary measurements, and it should work using the new tranny. My plan has been to only cut the floor out of the package tray. I'm a little worried about changing the belts though in the future. It is a pretty tight fit on the belt side. I'm thinking about creating a frame that surrounds the motor, to which double A arm suspension would be mounted to as well. If any work needs to be done then, the whole motor, tranny, and suspension can be removed and worked on outside of the car. You bastards are going to beat me to it!

Im glad to hear someone else did some measuring and feels it will fit. From what i can tell it will be fight but will go in. Im going the route of welding up a subframe in the rear. Well im still looking for a super to start my project so it may be a while....and at least your on the west coast volkdent.....lol

Just so you know, Central VW/Audi is putting in a S3 motor in a bug as we speak. I think it is a turboed I4 with 5 valves/cylinder. The VR6 will also sit in the exact location, and the width will be approx. the same because they all fit into the same chassis, Golf, A3, Jetta, Passat, all that. I want to get a cheap bagged VR6 to get everything mounted up and running, then put in one of the new 200 hp VR6's coming next year. So, to get an idea of how it might look, look at

I got a Jetta now..but I want a KG in the future. The thought had crossed my mind about installing my ABA equipped 2.0L engine with the 9A trans in a different car..but has anyone done it? Where the hell would I put the radiator?

I guess it would fit into a KG just fine the major problem is a little less access above the motor (maybe) its been a long time since I worked on a Ghia.The rad (passat B4) would be ideal in the spare wheel well,with a cutout under the bumper.
