I want to put a waterboxer engine in a Squareback but want it to fit below the stock engine cover. Anyone know if this will fit? If so will it bolt up to the stock tranny or will I need a adapter? The big thing is will it fit in the stock engine compartment! The Suby engine won't fit under the lid, so I am not sure if anything else will fit.
Thanks

The WaterBoxer(or WasserBOxer as i call it) Will fit under the original Engine Cover. However i have installed this engine in my -69 Fastback (check out the link above/below)and i wanted as much ground clearance as possible so i had to modify the engine cover a little bit.(the original Exaust also fit's nicer)I had to build it up som places with about 1".The engine fit's straight on your Transmission if you use a Type 4 210 or 215 mm Flywheel. If you use the Original 228 mm Flywheel you have to remove some aluminium inside the Transmission/Clutch housing due to the larger Pressureplate.
You also have to fit an needle bearing to support the main axle from the gear box(this is a MUST even when converting to a regular Type 4 Engine).
And you hve to use a late Gearbox with support for the Release bearing(or add the support mechanism to an old one).
You also need a starter from an automatic Transmission(Type 1 or 3), which is supported in both ends.
If you have late Suspension(IRS -68 an newer) you have to modify rear engine mounts(This modification lets you adjust the engine to fit under the engine cover or not)

Hey guys thanks for the Info. I have about some time to get it ready to go to the Type 3 Invasaion 2002 in Parma Idaho.. The wife wants ac and heat. Any one else jump in too. Now starts the quest for 2.1 W-boxer engine and electronics...
Jorn I didn't see any air inlets for a radiator? I guess it is in the spare tire well.

Ok I see it. Bright refelections from the paint and chrome. Your "English" is better than a lot of us.
. Screen or net would be right I think. I saw a squareback with what looked like the grill opening from a new beetle installed in that location. I never thought about the lovers from a T1, but thought a superbeetle front pan with the holes could be made to work.. If its not too much trouble you could email some pictures too.
Thanks

PapaG:
I have cut out a large hole in the front plate under the front bumper and have welded in a louvered "plate" (welded in where the License plate used to be.cut out from a T1 engine lid.take a look at the first picture... You can barely see it....
I have covered the hole with "Netting"??(is this a English word??? I'm from Norway so my enlglish is'nt complete...heheh)

If you're interested in more pictures i can E-mail you some...I have'nt put them on my WEBsite yet.

would it be easer if you went with carbs on this conversion?
i already have an upright motor in my notch right now. and i have an end less supply of vanagons and parts for them.
i even have a zero mile waterboxer siting here ive been wanting to use. so fitting them under the cover isnt an issue.
