Can anyone think of a reason why my brake warning light has started to come on whenever after I have been accelerating/coasting for a while, but goes off as soon as I apply the tiniest amnount of pressure to the brakes? There has been NO change in the brake quality...

I had a big brake job less than a year ago, so the master cylinder and all the brake pads are less than a year old and the wheel cyclinders were all checked then too.

I don't know if this is related, but the day before this started happening, I noticed that one of my front tires was completely flat *after* driving on it for a couple of blocks. Could I have knocked something loose?

Please help, the roads I drive every day are very steep...

First thing is first whenever it comes to an electrical problem. Check all connections. sounds to me like you have a short perhaps, i would first start at the master cylinder switches and then follow the wires from there. if there is a short under the dash check the small wires connecting to the light, if anything is rubbing against it or one of them is loose it can cause it to short and possibly make the light come on. if that fails, you might have a bad switch at the master, i would try that sooner than re-wiring the section.
