??? What parts are unique? Can they be replacmed? Or are they hard to find? And, are there aftermarket parts that will be good enough?

1967 was the transition year between the old 6V towel-rack bumpers and the new upright-headlight 12V cars. The list of `67-only parts, both body and mechanical, includes front fenders, rear lid & apron, door handles, door lock and dash knobs, seats/belts, rear axle shafts, wiper motor, wiring harness....it goes on and on and on.
Many parts are of course shared with earlier and/or later cars and you can often come up with a substitution that will work, but they are the hardest "big-window" car to restore accurately because of all of these unique pieces.

Don't forget the hood. That is what I am trying to find for my car right now.

I have been told that from 65-67 hoods are the same?

Is this true or noT?

The rear engine lid is totally different; I'm not 100% certain but as I recall the front hood is the same other than the size of the holes for the trim clips (you need to weld them up and redrill smaller to put the `65/`66 hood on a `67). Talkin' US-market here, there are probably variations elsewhere.

how about the '66 bugs anything hard to find on these?

Also please check out my topic about front suspensions and hard to find parts. I wondering if I should restrict myself to a certain year when buying a bug, so any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks

What makes it really difficult for you US 67 owners is the front fenders. When the 67 US model went with upright lights, the 67 Euro (read: rest-of-world) model retained the slanted lights. We got the upright lights in 68. So the US 67 fenders are one-of-a-kind.

And the replacement ones made in Mexico, Brazil, and Italy each have slightly different horn grille and headlight bucket locations (a recent DB&HVW issue had a good article on this) so if you don't replace them in pairs they can look silly.
A `68-`73 fender can be made over into a reasonable rendition of a `67 by a good sheetmetal guy.

i have two front 67 fenders for sale.. as i dont have a bug anymore.. i know one for sure is origingal, i dont know about the second.

1967

1" wider rear fenders (for the widened rear track)

1 year only doors (old model outside handle, new model inside handle)

first year for the 1500 engine

one year only airfilter

one year only rear apron(has a hole under the latch and is shaped differently)

12V(of course)

4.12 R&P

There are MANY more tiny things that I cannot think of. I have a ton of 67 only parts in my stash if anyone needs them, doors fenders, airfilters...etc,.

Another one year only item for the '67 which many people do not know about is the rear over rider bars on the rear bumper (rear towel rack). they are slanted downward towards the decklid for clearance. all others will not work. but the '67's will work for other models.

You might want to go measure those fenders again, Jake - if they're stock, they should be identical in width to other fenders, there's just ~3/4" less room between the tires and the fenders (track width is like that of an IRS car).
`67 outside doorhandles with good guidepins are "gold" (don't let `em get rusty).

Europe got the 1500 in 66.

The tricky part...

A 1965 VW 1500 is a type 3
A 1966 VW 1500 is a type 1

All type 3's changed name from VW 1500 to VW 1600 for the 1966 model year. 1500 engined type 3's were called VW 1600A.

67 rear fenders are wider....guaranteed.

The master cylinder and brake fluid reservior are one year only also. The reservior mounts behind the spare tire just like the 66 and older bugs, but it has dual chambers. The master cylinder uses rubber plugs in the top and a metal line from the reservior plugs directly into it just like on the old single circuit master cylinders, but the 67 has two of them instead of one.
