In my younger days, you drove along, switched the ignition off for a second and had this "boom." Could never figure out what caused it. High compression of oxygen and fuel?

When you turned off the ignition, you were still feeding fuel/air mixture through the engine, filling up the exhuast system. When you switch back on, the next charge of super hot exhaust lights up the unburned mix in the muffler - boom!

Txs Rob, now many years later I have the answer.
But what could cause the boom in this instance? All I can think of: some red hot carbon somewhere in the exhaust?
