Just curious what peoples opinions are of the VDO oil temp sensor that mounts in place of the pressure releif screw. I mounted mine in the front (as in front of care/flywheel side) and it seems to take forever to get to 180-200 F. I have my cooling flaps in place, a 1.5 qt sump, and a stock dog house set up... Should have been installed in the rear?

I happen to have one too, except i put mine in the rear (pully side) of the case. It seems to get to temp pretty quick (nothing abnormal, though). Someone correct me if i'm wrong, but by putting the thermacouple in th front of the case, it reads the oil coming out of the cooler, if you happen to be running the stock cooler. By putting mine in the back I believe im getting a true reading of the volume oil temp, as it picks it up just after the oil pump gears. Hope it helped, Andrew

Damn... if that's true I got some bad info. I was told that the front (flywheel side) is the pressure releif valve for the main journals. Bleeding off pressure at 70psi for the crank.

You really don't want to read the oil temperature out of the cooler. Any of the main supply galleys before the cooler will work. What you really need to know is the temperature of the oil that your pump is in the process of supplying to your bearings.Putting it very close to the oil pump on the pully end, also puts it close to the exhaust...could be some heat gain, you might need to shield it. You can also screw it into a main galley in place of a pipe plug if you have enough access. I would recommend putting in a steel thread insert for this. Ray

I'd simplify the whole thing. You want the temp of the oil at it's hottest point to warn against engine damage. that would be the pully side relief valve. If you even want to make it less complicated, VDO also makes a sender that fits perfectly in place of the stock oil drain.

What about drilling the temp sensor into the sump and measuring the oil temp at pickup? I think this would be a good place to put it - correct me if I am wrong or give me other ideas
